■ DE. COCKAYNE'S EESEAECHES. Dr. Cockayne has carried out. on hchalf of the. Government an invcstisalion of tlio sand dunes throiighoiit Xcw Zealand, and his report, which runs to 70 foolscap pages with many illustrations, lw.s bocn presented to Parliament. It deals with thp. Rcoloifj" and bntany of the dune*, and method of reclamation. Wo jxifsrss, according to Dr. Cockayne, more than 300,000 acres of sand, the Rrcalcr part cf which is not only worthless, but «. constant menace to the surrounding fertile land. Thi-s great tract could be rendered harmless, and in large, mcasuvo improved, and the cxi»rienco of other counlries sii""o-;Us that dune reclamation should ho regarded as a work for the- State. Tho most that privnto individuals can do is to make their holdings seeuro for tho time being. The Government should proceed with! great caution, but should an experiment be made in afforestation or other methods of reclaiming the dunes, Dr. Cockayne , would recommend for tho purpose the dunce near Levin, or those ucar WoodJiiU, Auckland.
