Armstrong (senior councillor) presided. It was decided to pay the Salvation Arrnv Hand its subsidy of ,£25 at once, as the money was needed to purchase new instruments. The free use of the lluniciPal Hall was granted to the promoters ot the fancy dress ball in aid of.the Old ieoples HomoJund. Councillor Nathan was appointed to represent the council on f ho , deputation which is being organised y 5° p 'J Dlalua Borough Council to wait on the Government with reference to a report on the Makuri Gorge electrical proposals. A communication from the Health Department, recommending that tho owner of certain premises should bo compelled to remove certain scrim and paper, was referred back, as the council had no power, the mtater being now'in .- e , n ° s of tl,e Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards. It was decided to call for tenders for alterations and repairs to the old fire brigade station, with a view to making it suitable for the Men's Free Club and tho Philosophical Society's museum, and also as rooms for the W.C.T.TJ. The dispute between thi couicil and Mr. R. S. Abraham over the water supply to his residence (which is outside the 'borough) was again before tho council, but was referred to the Works Committee. Councillor F. Nathan gave notice to move at the next meeting: "That the council take into consideration the advisability of applying for a commission to allocate "the contributions-of adjacent local bodies towards the erection and maintenance of a bridge over tho Manawatu Rher at Hokowhitu." : The Druids' fortnightly meeting held last night was well attended, A.D. Bro. G. Marshall presiding. Two candidates' were initiated and three proposed for membership. The delegate?; to tho Friendly Societies' Council reported on the business transacted at the last meeting of that body, an! stated that matters in connection with the establishment of a Friendly Societies' dispensary were in a forwird state. They also reported that the final round of the inter-lodge card tournev would be played on August 24. The 'Rev. Frank M'Donald, of the >Baptist Church, whose health y.ve way iecently, has gone on a recuperating trip to Australia.
