The five-mile cross-country championship of New Zealand was heM hero today, in Eplcndid weather, over a track from Ellerslio racecourse to Alexandra Park. The starters were as follow:— Otago: - Beatson. - Chambers, Frye, Thompson, and Notmaii. Wellington: C. Kowberry, F. Bowberry, Cook, Byrno, and Wilton. Auckland: Hill, Orn-tein, Jones, Eeid, and M'Callum. mil led all the way from Beatson, and finally won by 75 yards, his time being 82min. 15? cc. Nctman was third to finish, and tho order of the others was as follow:—Thompson, fourth; Eeid, fifth; Chambers, sixth; Wilton, seventh; Frye, eighth; C. Eowberry, ninth; F. liowbcrry, tenth; Ornstain, eleventh; Cook, twelfth; M'Callnm, thirteenth; Byrne, fourteenth; and Jones, fifteenth. 'i'lie teams match was won by Otago, Auckland being eec:nd, and Wellington third. A scaled handicap was hold in connection wilh the race, for which tho winner of tho individual championship was not eligible. This was won by Bcatson (Msec), with Thompson (55fcc.) second, and Notman (3."*ec.) third. The order of tho placing; of the others was:—Cham btrs (iiOscc), l'ourl.h; Wilton (Tmk-c), fifth; l!eid (Msec), sixth; Fryo (iteec.), seventh; C. Kowberry (25spc), eighth: V, Kowborry (33sec<), ninth; M'Callum (TOsce.), tenth; Orn.stcin ('l.Vcc), eleventh; and Cook (lOscc), twelfth.
