PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Tclegrapb. —Special Correspondent.! Palmerston, August 12. A number of Palmerston vocalists and elocutionists have entered for the carnival which is to h<> held at Xapicr this month. . These include JJif-ses Ellen Millar a.".id Ethel AYatson, and Messrs. L. W. Ilanlan and E. Palliser. The llayor has convened a meeting of ladies for Tuesday next for the pnrpofs of forming a strong committee to work in the interests of tha Horticultural Society. It is estimated that .£ISOO was taken at the performances at tho Opera House this week by "Th« Arcadians" and tho pantomime "Jack and the Beanstalk." All the flasmills in the Foxlo.i district that had closed down, recommenced operations this week. A ' very old and respected resident of Palmerston, Mrs. Lucy Elizabeth Darrcll, died at the hospital on Saturday. Deceased arrived in Canterbury nearly fifty years ago, and subsequently came to Palmerston. Through their car bidding on a slippery road Mrs. Moody, of Linton, and Mr. J. Cricksnn were thrown out. whilo motoring betwe-.-n Fitzgerald and Linton on Friday, and both received severe bruises. The representative- hockey match between the Oroua Rnb-nnion and Jfanawatu, played on the Palmerston Show Grounds yesterday afternoon, was won by the former by four goals to three, after a fast and interesting game. The annual hockey match between the Palmcr.'ton and Masterton Post and Telegraph offices was also played on tho show grounds yesterday, and after a very fast game ended in a draw, or.e goal each.
