TAXIS, FARES & STANDS

THEIR REGULATION. DEPUTATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL. A deputation representing (he taxi-cab drivers, interviewed lbs City Council last evening. It was pointed out by Mr. Bruton, on behalf of the deputation, that if tho proposals of tho council were given effect to in regard to stands, and tho cabs bo distributed over the city at the various localities, that those owners and drivers who were first on the old stand near tho Union Bank should have tho first consideration when it came to be decided who should remain there. Some of them had been there two years and three months. Others had come later. There wcro fifteen or sixteen ears at tho stand now, nnd the allotted number of plaree was eight. Ho said in regard to tho telephone at tho stands, that it was paid for by one man, who charged others 12s. Gd. a share, and the rights of the eight or nine, contributors should also be considered. As regards fare rates, they thought that 15s. an hour was a fair chargo for a "straight-out run," though for hire by tho hour "on the block"—running from place to place in tho city—they would agree to 12s. fid. Iu England 12s. Gd. was charged per hour, but there the cars, accessories, and tho petrol wcro cheaper. The Mayor: "Havo you a mileage rate?" Mr. Bruton: "A shilling a inilo per head." The Mayor asked if the deputation wished to say anything about tho.proposed by-law regarding tho passing of trams by motor-cars. Mr. Bruton replied that they considered the City Council's proposals in that direction quite right nnd proper. After tho deputation had retired a resolution was passed that they bo informed by letter that the By-Laws Committee would be pleased to see the deputation at its next meeting; and that, instructions l>e given to the committee to report upon tho three questions, viz:—Tho bylaw regarding the passing o{ traniß, the qn option of stands, and the matter of fares. Councillor Fuller said that tho deputation . represented only a section of ■ the drivers, and at his suggestion i.t was decided that steps be taken to havo them all represented.
