THE LAST OF THE SENIOR GAME. | KARORI CHAMPIONS. . Karori 1 United 1 Vic. College 1 Y.M.C.A 'i Wesley 3 Wellington 1 Saturday's hockey games closcd this season's senior championship. Karori, who are on top this year, wero lucky in drawing with United, tho latter playing by far tho better gariie. Wesley succeeded in defeating Wellington, neither teams showing anything like senior form. At Karori Victoria College managed to win irom Y.M.O.A. after a close and iut'eresting game. KARORI—UNITED. On No. 1 ground at Day's Bay United extended tho winners ol this >' ClU ',? championship and, in the second tpci, held Ike advantageKarori commenced by attacking but frco hit to United relieved the pressure, and their forwards then moved down field. L. Davies stopped their progress and the Karori forwards were soon again in the circle, Jl'Eldowiiey saving by hitting behind. The attacking forwards now sent in sonio hot shots, but Dwycr, tlio United goal-keeper, "saved splendidly. At length from a t'wenty-nve, the United forwards broke through tho opposing backs and Collins secured, but his shot went wide, the hitter slipping at tho critical moment. United conceded a corner" from which their forwards obtained, possession, and play shifted to tho Karori circle, Smythes "cjfcutro going behind. Hammond, Karori right-wing, now managed to turn defence into attack, buc his forwards failed to take sufficient art* vantage of tho opportunity thus created. Again Uiiited pressed, Campbell stopping what looked like a certain goal. G. Davies secured in United's twenty-five, and carried the ball into tho circle, where he passed to liadl who had no difficulty in scoring for Karori through tho goalkeeper rushing out. United now rushed operations into Karori territory, and though the defence was difficult to t get through, Andrews eventually equalised ' the score by sending in a splendid shot from an awkward ancle, Hunter having no chance of saving. The spell thus ended "one all."
On resuming both sides attacked in turn the respectivo backs showing good defensive work. The United forwards, however, were playing with moro combination than their opponents and, time and again, reached the circle, but' faulty shooting was mainly tlio cause why 110 score resulted. Towards tlio close of the game, Karori were busy in the striking area, but Murphy failed his side when in a good position. The United backs then moved piny into the centre of the field, but a free hit let Karori iu again and C. Hickson saved by hitting behind. The game ended without further score, Karori being then iu United twenty-five. Mr. J. W. Gend.il! was referee.
WESLEY-WELLINGTON. Wesley and Wellington met at Day's Bay on No. 3 ground, which was not in the best of condition. Throughout the game neither side showed any sign of combination, tho forwards apparently liking tlio lono hand game better than combined work. 111 tho first'' »pcll Wellington reached tho desired area, but could not scorfc. Keeping up the attack, Wesley conceded a corner, the ball going to Dunn, who found tho net for Wellington. This woke Wesley up, and (still playing individually) they endeavoured to get through the opposing backs, but with no success. Birch eventually secured, and, carrying the ball into the Wellington circle, equalised the score. The play in tho second spell was at times even worse than it had been in the first. Wesley attacked, the Wellington goalkeeper failed to clear the ball from tlie circle, and Keys, bein° handy, secured the second goal for his Bide. Wellington subsequently managed to reach their opponents' territory, and remained there for some time, but' ib 'sfeot-fc resulted. The Wesley backs then cleared by hard hittin;;, and their forwards rushed to the other end, the ball going across to Keys, who rattled 011 Wesley's third goal. No. further score resulted, and the game thus ended in favour of Wesley by the niargiu stated. Mr. Carver was referee.
COLLEGE—Y.M.C.A. Victoria College met Y.M.C.A, at Karori, and were successful in winning by 4 goals to 2. In tho first spell Y.M.C.A. held the advantage, and, shortly after tho commencement, Paul secured their first goal. College then'livened up, hut for a. tiiuc could not penetrate tho defence. An opening, eventually occurred, and Fitt equalised the s-ccre.' Y.M.C.A. again attacked and the movement ended in Paul again finding the net. The spell thus ended in favour of Y.M.C.A. The sscond spell saw College playing with more dash, but the Y.M.C.A. backs put up a sound defence. College forwards at last broke through, however, G. Strack securing a goal. Later on, the vme plaver once mciro got a scoring shot t'brough. Towards tho end of the spell, Fitt obtained a further goal, the game thus ending in favour of College by i goals to 2. Mr. J. C. Cusnek was referee.
THE OTHER GRADES. The winners of tho junior championship (United), after a close and interesting game, drew with Wellington, cach siilo scoring a goal. Wilson found the net for United, and Williamson was successful for Wellington. Mr. S. M'Dowall was. referee. K.Y.M.I. were successful in defeating St. Mark's .by 3 goals to 1. Mr. M. Luekio was referee. Victoria College A easily accounted for Wesley; who played nine men, by 9 goals to uif. Tho referee appointed tailed to put in an appearance, and so Mr. C. P. M'Keuzie controlled tho game. Victoria College B (3) defeated Y.M.C.A. (2). Metropolitan were successful in defeating Gregg's by 7 goals to 2. Mr.Collio was referee. ■ liutt Valley wcro defeated by Government .Life Insurance by 4 goals to 2. Third Class. Hutt Valley (2) defeated Gregg's (1). Victoria College (13) defeated Wesley (1). The losers played with only eight men. Ladies' Matclics, Senior and junior trial games wcro plaj;ed on Saturday with a new to selecting teams to represent Wellington at the tournament next month. After a fast and interesting game the A's (senior) succeeded in winning by 3 gcols to 1. Miss V. Warren (2) and Miss Scrimshaw scored for the A's and Miss Cameron for the B's. Messrs. Falconer and Carver controlled the game. Tha A's (junior) were successful in defeating the B's bv 2 goals to nil. Messrs. ICeall and Gcndall controlled tho play. Tho selector (Mr. A. C. Geddis) has chosen the following teams for next Saturday's ladies' trial game. A team (while blouses): Goal, Miss Rccdley; full-backs. Misses Tinney and Cameron; halves, Misses Turner, A.'Warren, and Harris; forwards, Mis-ses M'Donnell, Charlesworth, Dement. T. Warren and Shearer.
B team (coloured blouses): Goal, Miss Jackson; full-backs. Misses Ford anil Bramley; halves, Misses May, Sievwright, and Allen; forwards, Misses M'Konzie, Scrimshaw, C. Cameron, Williams, and' Ccoke. Reserves: Misses Harris (Ramblers), Bennett (Hinemoa), Guthrie and Lepper (retone).
