PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Spccia.l CorrcsDondont.) Palmcrston, August 5. A "card evening" was held at the High School last night, organised by tho Rector, Mr. J. E. Vernon, and stall, in aid of the High School and 'iocliiiieal School funds. There was a fair attendance, and a very enjoyable time was snent. Tho first part of the evening was dcVoted to a progressive euchre match, tho lady's-prise in which was won by Mrs W Stubbs and the gentlemen s prize by Mr. A. 15. Bennett. The staff provided supper, and afterwards a dauco was hold, the music being supplied by Mrs. W. M'Konzio. Tho Mavor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Nash) were among tho visitors present. At a largelv-atteiuled meeting of the local branch of the W.C.T.U., the following resolution was passed: "That this meeting place on record our deep sympathy with the family of the late Mr. T, k Taylor, and our appreciation of Ilia strenuous labours on behalf of the causp wo all love. Especially as women do we feel that we have indeed lost one wlioea whole life'was.spent in the emancipation of the womanhood of this fair land. Though we mourn tho loss of God's good wtrkman, we believe that he, being dead, yet spcakolh." The Tcchnichl School Cadets paraded in force last night under Captain H bulky. The corps was put through various movements by Lieut. Robins\m, stall officer for senior cadets, who expressed himself as being highly pleaswl with Ilia progress which the company is making. Mr. R, H. Whalle.v, who for some twentv years has been a steward of (ho Mana'watu Club, has taken over the family Hotel in l'almorston. 'The Hon. ,T. T. Paul spent tho weekend in I'almerston.
