READY-MADE ORCHARDS.

THE NEW STATK SCHEME. . The first ten of the orchards prepared and planted by the Department of Agriculture at Waerenga avo now being offered for selection. This (says the Auckland "Herald") marks an important phase in the development of the scheme for providing ready-made orchards for settlers desirous of taking un fruit culture The orchards will be obtainable on the optional system of tenure. The ten orchards vary from 21 acres to 48 acres in extent. All are planted with peaches, apples, pears, and plum s , and in some there are small vineyards. With eacli orchard there are several acres in grass, to provide a site for a homo rnd grazing space for a horse or a cow. The conditions under which the orchards will bo taken up are fairly strict as regards upkeep and general knowledge of fruit culture. The orchards being in the vicinity of the experimental stations, information will be readily forthcoming for thr> benefit of the orcliarilists. The time for receiving applications for theso orchards closed at 4 p.m. yesterday. As was expected, the orchards are eagerly fought after, and at closing time the Lands Office ]>nd received over 70 application?. It is.anticipated that a few more will come through the post.
