SALVATION ARMY.
Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather there was a. fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Salvation Army at Petone, which was held in the local barracks, oil Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Eivau), who occupied the chair, said that he had always recognised the powerful influence of the Salvation Army as a social and philanthropic agency. He considered that the work accomplished by their leader, General Booth, during his lifetime, was marvellous, and its value and worth, from a national standpoint, was a matter of common testimony. Major Rowley presented the annual report and balancesheet. He said the result of their SelfDenial Fund for Australasia was .£7500. They had 78 institutions, Army shelters, etc., in New Zealand, which provided accommodation for dill) persons each bight (on an average). -The- report further stated that, leaving out shelters, people's palaces, and metronoles, where people come and go nightly, there were admitted into the CO homes 3317 persons, and there were passed out 3057, of whom G97 were sent to friends, and 958 placed in situations. Only 74 out of the total wero discharged as unsatisfactory. The Rev. Mr. Thomson (Presbyterian) also testified to the good. work of the Salvation Army. The zeal and fervour of tho Salvation Army, he declared, had proved an inspiration to the churches and clergy of every creed and country. Tho Rev. Mr. Cotton (Primitive Methodist) offered prayer, and the meeting closed with (he benediction.
