NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glencoe.l Merrie Valet, who was held under lease by Mr. H. Connop at AVoqdville ,bas now been returned to his Hastings owner, and has joined D. Watt's team of workers. Captain Jingle and Amaru were shipped ■south by the Mararoa ; last ..night.... It ...is. probable that the pair will lie' taken to Melbourne at the conclusion of the C.J.Cmeeting. Dazzling, who recently joined W. Whittakcr's team at Hastings, fell on the roadsone morning last week, and was badly cut about the knees. J. M. Cameron took St. Albert home to Hastings on Monday. It may consequently be presumed that the St. Andrew gelding will not be a runner at Riccarton. Wi'rral is to be given a run in one of the hack races at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club meeting to-day, and will then be shipped south to contest the Enfield Steeples at Riccarton. The Birkenhcad gelding jumps the country well, and it will lx> remembered that he defeated Hoanga in tho Hack Steeples at Napitr. The form of the latter at Trentham apparently makes Wirral out to be a very useful sort in horseflesh. , ' My Lawyer was shipped home to Dun<?din on Thursday, and is ;tn unlikely starter at Riccarton. Tho black horse went very sore after racing in tho Parliamentary Handicap, and it was doomed advisable to send him home without starting again at tho meeting. It was on account of the heavy state of the. going that Wniputero was not started at Trentham. The Officer mare is quite right, and is to be taken on to Riccarton for the Grand National Hurdles, in which she will be ridden by W. Young. This horseman will have the mount on Dnil in the Steeplechase. F. Coleman will ride Compass in the Grand National Hurdles. C. Cress will be on Kildonan, and F. Flynn on Whakaweira, but, so far, no rider has been en-' gaged for Centaur. Koran has lately been giving M. Gardner trouble, and it appears as if the Pilgrim's Progress horse is again developing symptoms of stringhall. As R. Hatch will be on Provocation in the Winter Cup, another rider will have to be found for Undecided. The o;<;ner of the horse yesterday wired C Jenkins assing him if he would ride, but, though no answer has Wn received yet, it is understood that the Levin liorceuian has been engaged to ride Odessa. It is, therefore, likely that S. Reid will obtain the mount ou Undecided. Tt was noticeable at Trentham that Merrie Zealand was carrying a considerably more attenuated appearance than usual, but, apparently, this condition does not suit him, and he ran worso on the third day of the meeting than he did in the Parliamentary Handicap. When the Martinborough trainer (J. Russell) had the bay gelding in his stable, ho generally had him apparently much above himself in condition, but he put up some gocd performances, and had several wins to his credit.

Considerable trouble was eone to bv the owner of Odessa to land that horse at. the post in a cheerful frame of mind on Saturday. On tho middle day, the St. Ambrose horse- was fretting a good deal, and was'in a lather before leaving the birdcage. His owner felt, confident" that the horse would do better if only he could bo landed at the post in a generous mcod, so te made special arrangements with tho railway authorities to bring the horse frdm the Hutt Slation by a train which arrived just before the last race. On former occasions the Hutt horses were entrained at !) a.m. As is well known, the experiment proved successful, for Odessa duly won his race.

Mr. R. Campbell, whoso hotel was destroyed by fire at AVhangamonjonn yesterday, is the well-known owner of To Mi. V. C'olemnn was badly shaken when Sapience fell while schooling at Kiccnrton on Saturday, but, fortunately, the jockey had no bones broken. The Winter Cup candidate, Grand Slam, was lnrne after working at Hiccarton on Saturday. News from Christehurch states that the trotting stallion, General Lincoln, owned by Mr. R. Humphreys, fell dead on the road at Tai Tnpii. General Lincolm was apparently in good health at the lime. When Ihe last mail left England, the Derby winner, Sunstnr, had earned £U.i% in stake money during the present Season. There was a record "gate" at Cliniitilly on the occasion of the .French Derby. The receipts were returned at. MII.STO francs, or closo on ,£5355. while tho amount nf the ttirnnver nt the "Mutuals" showed a decrease, being -C123.50U. FIXTURES. August 8, 10, and 12-Canterbury J.c.'s Grand National.
