RAILWAY MANAGEMENT!
Sir,—Tho modern railway genius declares that New Zealand possesses one nf tho l>est railway systems in tho world, n,nd notwithstanding our own pergonal experience, we all believe him. When lie travels ho has a special car and the best engine, but when we poor, long-suffering suburbanite's wish to return homo after our day's toil, wo havo to put up with crowded cars and a terribly leaky engine (known and condemned on tho liutt line as "Pearson's dream"). This was the case last Friday evening, when engine Nc. CO was attached to tho 5.25 p.m. train at Thorndon, and after a lot of struggling and several stoppages, succeeded in reaching Johnsonvillo ot C.23 p.m., thus talcing 5S minutes to travel six miles. It is a woll-known fact that the railway men do not like to use this expensive engine, but they have to obey orders. Another very positive danger on this 5.25 p.m. train is the overcrowding. T,ots ot passengers are compelled to stand on tho platforms, as there is not sufficient accommodation in the cars. The guards have asked for an extra carriage, but tho authorities refuse to supply one, stating that tho train would then require two engines to pull it up tho incline—l am, etc., PASSENGER. July 17, 1011. [Copies of the above three- letters on railway matters were submitted to tho Minister for Railways. _ but Mr. Millar, did not wish to avail himself of the opportunity of replying to any of tiio statements made.]
