HOME SAVINGS BANK.

A GREAT SUCCESS IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Tolenranh.— Special CorrespondenU Christchurch, July 21. The issue of "homo savings banks" by the Post Office has been a. great success in Christchurch, about 650 having been issued up to the present. It has now been decided Unit the boxes will bo handled at the following offices in the. Christchurch postal district:—High riSreet, Sydenham; Kniiipoi, Lyttelton, Ashburton, and Rangiora. This will mean that the boxes can bo supplied from these offices, and depositors niny tako , their savings to these places. Previously this could only bo done at the chief of- ; fico in Christchurch, and the- inconvenienco to country people was sufficient to ! restrict the growth of the system. Some , idea of the possibilities in the accnmula- ! tion of small coins in these_ boxes can bo obtained by the fact that in one case a married couple decided to give to tho box nil the threepenny pieces that they had. In a remarkably short time the ' box became very heavy, and in order to ■ satisfy mutual inferences that pennies had been placed in (lie safe, it was taken ■ to tho post office, where it was found to contain over £5. The subjects of this economy were both agreeably surprised at the sum, which had grown without any apparent effort.
