The Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Carroll) left yesterday to attend the Maori gathering at Waahi.
Mr. Henry Ward, late of Fordell, died in the Wanganui Hospital on Tuesday last, aged 75 years. Deceased was born nt Heading (England) in 3830, and served in tho Navy, under- Commodore Goodenough, seeing: service in the Mediterranean and tho Baltic. He emigrated to New Zealand in IS7-J. Major E. ff. W. Laseolles, formerly of the general instructional staff at headquarters, New Zealand defence forces, ■has been appointed aide-de-camp to Viscount Kitchener, British Consul and Minister Plenipotentiary in Egypt. Mr. E. K. Hammond, manager in Wellington for the South British Insurance Company, is returning from London by tho Euahino on Wednesday morning. Rifleman E. M'Guiro, of the Eastbourne Riflo Club, who is leaving for Nelson, was cnU'i'taiiu'd by his clubinates at n social held at the bay on Thursday evening. There was a good muster of club members', ,and Councillors Banna.lyne and Wills were present, Captain Hobbs occupied the chair. The chairman briefly outlined the energy and enthusiasm displayed by Rifleman R. M'Guiro since the' inception of the club, and expressed tho opinion that he would l)e missed as an active member and as a resident. Hiileman M'Guhe briefly responded. Mr. A. 11. Henderson has been appointed manager for the New Zealand Oilfields, Ltd. Mr. Henderson lias had experience in oil boring in l'eru, Baku, and on other oilfields. Mr. 1 , . Levi, who has undergone a severe illness, is now able to leave his bed for a few hours daily, and is mending slowly but satisfactorily. Tho members of "The Whip" Dramatic Company passed through Wellington en route to Sydney by tho Warrimoo yesterday. Mr. Ambrose Manning, tho well-known English actor, ' has been rc-cngaged by J. C. Williamson, Ltd., for another three months. ,This engagement will keep him in Australia, 'Up "ml November next. , The remains of the late Mr. ,T. W. Poynton wero cremated at the Karori Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Monsignor Stockman, of Los Angeles, who was a passenger from San Francisco by the Aorangi, left for Sydney yesterday by the Warrimoo. Mr. Eagles, a big-game hunter from America, who is at present paying a brief visit to New Zealand, is on route to Africa. Mr. H. P. Wynn Williams, son of Mr. W. , . H. Wynn Williams, barrister, of Christchurch, .died at Mastcrton yesterday morning. Deceased, who was 43 years of age, was farming in Marlborough Sounds bcfoi'o going to Mastcrton.
