ONE OF THOSE LABOUR CASES.
OFFICIAL PROMPTLY MET. (By Telegrarli.—Special Correspondent.) < Feilding, July 14. One of those instances of the harassing methods of the administration of Labour legislation nnme'out in Hie Feilding fi.M. Court, where a local contractor was prosecuted for failing to obtain the Labour Department's permit to erect a scaffolding over 16ft. in height. The builder pleaded guilty, and set forth lack of knowledge of the requirements of tho Act, and the magistrate inflicted the smallest possible fine (ono shilling), whereupon the Department official, who, though ho had a representative in Feilding, had come from Wellington for the purpose of conducting this prosecution, asked for his travelling expenses. Tho. magistrate was prompt and unmistakable in his reply. He refused point blank to order tho expenses to be paid by defendant, and added that there was no necessity for the inspector to come from Wellington, as the police could have conducted the case just as well.
