(From Our Special Correspondents.) Masterton, July 11. A large number of visitors nro in town for the competitions under the auspices of the Masterton .Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society, which opened in the Town Hall- .this afternoon. The weather cleared about noon to-day, and thero are indications of it remaining fine. A considerable sum of money was placed upon the Estimates at the lastsession of Parliament far the erection of Departmental buildings in Masterton. As there has, so. far, been no indication of a desire to expend the vote, a question is being asked regarding the subject. , There is a lady resident in Masterton who claims the- distinction of having lived under live British Sovereigns. Fifteen charges of breaches of tho Licensing; Act were investigated in Masterton during the quarter ending .Tune 30. At the monthly meeting of the directors of tho Workers' Mutual lSencfit Building Society, held last evening, tho treasurer reported a credit balance in the. bank of MM 17s. 7d. A moving of shareholders is to be called for July 27 to conduct a ballot for cCIIOO free of interest. A young man named .Tchn M'Gonville, who, although only nineteen years of age, has a list of convictions against him, was fined ,£l and costs at the Magistrate's Court yesterday for having used improper language. During the quarter ending June 30, forty applications for old age pensions wore granted in Mns-tarlon. Olio application was. refused, and twelve wero pending at the end of- the, period. - .-The total' number of cases heard by the Stipendiary Magistrate in Masterton during tho quarter ending Juno 30 was 19D.
