CIVIC CONGRESS.
A WORLD-WIDE INVITATION.
The United Stoles Secretary for Stat* (Mr. P. C. Knox) has intimated to tho American Consular Agent in Wellington (Mr. C. Unrcourt Turner) thai, an International Municipal Congress n.nd Exposition will bs held in Chicago from September 18 to September 30. The congress will be conducted under (ho auspices of the American Association of Commerce. A circular forwarded to the American Consular Apvit, and ouvcyed by him to the Actim-I'miiier (Sir James Carrol!) ami the l)eputv-Mavor (Mr. .7. Smith), states that it is' desired all cities throughout the world shall participate who have anything,of interest'to advance on tho lines of: "Charters, forms of government, municipal accounting, parks and playgroundi, health and sani-' ration, corrcc'icn, taxation, home rule,', schools, police, fire, and libraries." Delegates are invited to take with them models, photographs, views, etc., illustrating municipal activities and problems. It is slated that the congress and exposition will be thoroughly international in its scope, and will be the first of it= kind ever held fn the United States. Tho circular adds that the presence of municipal experts of world-wide famo mid known ability will make possible a wide range of comparisons between communities and cities. Formal invitations to municipalities throughout the world are to bo forwarded by tho Association of Commerce. A "Good Roads Congress" \s to be held in Chicago simultaneously with the Municipal Congress. Tho Deputy-Mayor will bring, theso matters under tho notice of tho Wellington City Council at its meeting on Thurs-> day evening- next.
