Christchurchj July 7 Mr. Taylor, M.P., as Mayor, has agreed ' to preside at (ho political meeting to bo addressed by Mr. Massey next Tuesday. In a letter signifying Ins willingness to . act as chairman, Mr. Taylor refers to a statement made by Mr. Massey in th c Jlousc. on November 20, 1010, as reported on page 1170 of Hansard, in which Mr Massey said that he was behind tho scenes in tho Seddon-Taylor case, and if over it fell to his lot ho could tell a strange story in connection therewith Mr. Taylor expresses tho hope that Mr. Massey will avail himself of (he opportunity on Tuesday night of proving tho allegation quoted, or, failing his opportunity to do so, ho will tender Mr. Taylor and the constituency ho represents a hank and generous apology, COUNTRY RACING CLUBS. , ~. ~ Levin, July 7. A public meeting, convened bv the Mayor, discussed tho action of the Racing Commission in recommending the striking out ot tho Horowhcnua, Racing Club Itwas unanimously resolved to send a deputation to tho Minister for Internal Affairs, consisting of representatives' of tho two local sporting bodies and tho Agricultural and Pastoral Association (ah C I which, uso tho racecourse) and thrco borough, councillors, to protest against tho commissioners action. Tho following resolution was carried:—"That this meeting ox- \ press a strong desire that country mem-1 bers of Parliament should uuito in the i' common interests of the country racing; clubs to oppose tho unfair allocation of. permits, as recommended by tho Racing Commissioners." NEW PICTURE' THEATRE. New Plymouth, July 7. Negotiations have now been concluded for the jiurchaso of a central site for tho erection of a picturo theatre in fcrro concreto for Mr. Garnet Saunders, who ■ has been running the picturo busincst hero for over a year. There aro now two permanent picture shows, but Mr. Saunders is in temporary premises. It is estimated that tho new buildiag will cost .£2500. TARANAKI OIL. New Plymouth, July 7. No. 3 Bore of tho Taranaki- Petroleum Company at Moturoa is now drilled to a depth of 4015 ft. Tho original intention was to drill to 4000 ft. Tho directors are now taking steps to test tho deposits of oil at this depth, and to-day'purchased, from tho Standard Oil Company 3500 ft. of two-inch casing. This casing will bo placed in tho well, and the oil allowed to flow. It has been flowing.for some time between the casings in fairly.good quantities, and in about a week it will bo seen what the well is going to be capablo of. Oil still flows satisfactorily at Number 3 Bore, tho quantity being well up to tile usual average . . CANARY SHOW,. Auckland, July 7. Tho Auckland Canary and Cago Birds* Club's annual show was opened this after-' noon by Mr. Arthur Myers, M.P. The crested birds were noticeably good, Mr. W. A. Hanson winning the North Island championship for tho best crested canary, and tho cup for tho best' Norwich. Colour fed birds wero of exceptionally good class, most of tlie prizes being won by Mr. J. Cornwall. Tho cinnamons were tlie best shown for years, whilst tho plainhead Norwiches were excellent,'. Mr. Jones's clear buff winning tho North Island championship. THE BIG CHOIR AND BACH.
