RUGBY FOOTBALL. TARANAKI BEATS WANGANUI. MATCH AT HAWEKA. illy Tclcgrapli—Special llcporler.l Hawera, July 6. Tho annual Eugby match between Tarannki iiiul AVanga'ini was played at 11a".cra (o-clay on liayly l'arlc. Thn pame wab bright and inloroFtinp, aud fast, but 'J'aranaki were coufidcrably tlio bettor team. The teams were as follow;— Tarnnaki (Amber and Black).—Fullback; Shcehan; thrce-iiuarters. Cameron; Stohr, and Prince: live-oifiliilis. lioberts and Mynott; half, Brown; forward?, Taylor (wing), Cain, Osborne, Bcou, Hawkins, Kisfick, Door, and O. Young. Vl'jnganui (Blue and Black).—Full-back, Parker; time-quarter?, Stewart, Collier, Pereivai; fivp-cighHis, JfTetish an'l Campion; half, Atkins; forward?, JPDonald (wing), Oi 11. Cunningham, R. Leahy, Takarangi, Schmidt, Dustin, and Bailey. Slick work by the Taranaki backs had W.uiganui in temporary trouble as soon as the game Was commenced, but the opportunity for a score did not then present itself. A miss-kick by a Taranaki back got the side into trouble, but Sheehan, tho full-back, got them out of danger by a .sensational mark. Taranaki attempted a passing-attack from their own twenty-five, and lioberts sent a wretched pass "to Stohr. Percival, of Wanganui, whipped the ball off the ground, and galloped for the line, but Sheehan grassed him by a beautiful tackle. The Blue man, however, was just over. Wanga.iui ft Taranaki 0 Tlay was not very long in progress again when 3lynoH set the backs going. He passed out' to Roberts, who sent on to Stohr, and the last-named streaked clean through the majority of tho visiting team. Stohr converted with a great kick. Taranaki •> ■\Vangaaui 3 A mixed, but finished passing-rush across the field, and back again, ended in Prince scoring, and Stohr converted. Taranaki Wanganui Stohr tried, to further increase tho scoro bv potting, but did _ not succeed. Good work bv individual AYnngamii forwards resulted in Taranaki being sorely pressed, and a mull by Sheehan looked likclv to result in an increaso in tho Blues' score. Howe v er, at the critical moment, the situation was saved. Before half time, Taranaki got over' again, ihe hall was sent out through the backs to Roberts, who kicked ahead iOr htohr and .Prince to ehaso. Stohr secured, and fought his way over. Taronnl;: Wanganui •' The first incident in the second spell was a fine bleak through the ruck by Brown, the Taranaki half. . He was followed by a swarm of Amber and BlaeK forwards, who wero too swift for the Blues, and set up a hot attack on tne ■\Vanganui line. From a scrum, the ball went out beautifully to Mynott, and then to Hcberts, who robbed the team of a try bv a bad pass. Immediately afterwards' Dewar got over, but Atkins, of AVanganui, snajiped the leather out ot his hands, aud forced. Good footwork bv Takarangf got Wanganui out of dan<r?r, and clever back ]>lay by Campion helped them considerably, rcrcival had two shot< at goal from good positions, but failed to add to AYanganui's score. Tl'« cleverness of Jlynott saved Taranaki. when AVanganui had them cornered, but AYangnnui came again, and set up a forward attack, which, however, did not avail them much. . The Taranaki forwards presently removed play to the other end of the paddock, through a scries of rushes, and repeatedly were within inches of scoring. From a. mark by Mynott, Stohr attempted to goal, and'narrowly misfed scoring. AVanganui then went away with a fine rush, being led by Takaraugi, whose footwork was delightful. A passing rush between Collier, Dustin, M'l 1 etisli, and P.ercival looked dangerous, but .Sheehan brought tho last man down. Taranaki Ihon'swept tho attackers away, and, when in tho Blues' twenty-five, Mynott broke through, and passed to Brown, who had nothing to do but take advantage of the opening made for him by the veteran. Brown ran in yards ahead of the opposition just on the call of time, and Stohr converted. Taranaki IS AVanganui .'1 Mr. O'Shea, of Tatea, was .referee. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY.
