To-day the Acting-Prime Minister and the. Hon. A. T. Ngata will be in Canterbury; the Hon. J. A. Millar, the Hon. G. Fowlds, the Hon. T. Mackenzie, tho Hon. U. Buddo in Wellington, and the non. Pi. Al'Kenzio in Nelson. The Hon. T. Mackenzie returned to Wellington from Taranaki yesterday. Mr. "W. F. Massey, the Lender of the Opposition, who leaves for the south tonight, will deliver a political address In Christchurch on Tuesday next. Appreciation of tho services rendered to tho Anglican Synod and to the diocese during the past thirty-eight years by Mr. W. IL Quick was expressed at yesterday's meeting of the Synod. The Synod also expressed its sympathy with Mr. Quick in his enforced retirement from active work. Mr. Quick served as a member of the Synod, lay secretary, and chancellor. The Eev. A. L. Hansell and Professor Easteriield have been elected Governors of the Bishop Hadfield Memorial College, vice the Rev. T. 11. Sprott (now chairman ex oEicio, as Bishop), and Mr. T. F. Martin, now chancellor of the "Wellington diocese. The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) is reported to be still making steady progress towards recovery. Yesterday lie was reported to be very much easier, and tho doctors are well satisfied witli the progress he has made. It is impossible to .state definitely as yet when Mr. Wilford will bo able to resume active duties. There are rumours of three candidates for the Egmont seat—Mr. Dive (the pitting member), Mr. Wake (Mayor of JJI- - and Mr. W. C. Dudley, who has definitely decided to contest the seat, states the Kahotu correspondent of a Taranaki paper. News has been received at Christchurch of the death of Mr. L. E. Selig, of Astoria, Oregon, United States of America, second son of the late liev. B. A. Selig, of Wellington. Deceased, who is a brother of Mr. P. Selig, of Christchurch, was attached for many years to tho editorial staff of the "Astoria Budget."— Press Association. The resignation of Bishop Wallis was mentioned at Saturday's meeting of tho Anglican Synod. It was decided to place on record the Synod's sense of tho selfdenying earnestness and the efficient character of Bishop Wallis's work, and also to record its earnest wishes for his future health and happiness. It was stated that Bishop Wallis had given up tho best 1G or 17 years of his life (o Hie service in New Zealand, and his humility, his extreme generosity, his sympathy, and his conscientiousness to duty, despite illhealth, were feelingly touched upon. Our Wiingamii correspondent states:— Tills "Chronicle" gives expression to a rumour, stated to have been widely circulated locally, to the effect that Mr. J. T. Hogan, member for Wanganui, is to be appointed to the Legislative Council, and that Sir John Findluy would contest the Wanganui scat. Mr. Hogan, when interviewed on tho matter, stated that it was tho "first he had hc-ard of it," ami that 1 tho report was absolutely without foundation. .The appointment of Mr. J. A. Thompson, 8.\., B.Sc., as Government Palaeontologist is notified in the current Gazette. Constables G. A. Dandy and H. Martin have been appointed inspectors under the Factories Act. Mr. I". V. Freyer is gazetted as chairman of the Marsden and Ivaipara Licensing Committee, in succession to Mr. T. S. Smith, S.M. The Hon. Sir. G. M. O'Rorko is gazetted as a Legislative Councillor under « writ dated Juno 21, 1911. Mr. B. A. Levinson, a solicitor of tho Snpremo Court of Judicature in England, has been appointed a commissioner of tile Supreme Court of New Zealand in England fur the purpose of administering and taking oaths, affidavits, and affirmations. Tho death occurred at Auckland yesterday of Sir. J. T. Boylan, one of tho old identities of Auckland, aged 9,1 years. Ho had lived in Auckland for over half a century.—Press Association. »
