OTAKI ITEMS.

Eain fell on 15 days hero last month, tho total fall being 2.30 inches. The maximum fall was .57in. on June 27. There were six frosts.

A locpj resident has been picking ripe raspberries during tho week, while another had samples of edible blackberries. These facts apparently are proof of the mildness of the Otaki climate.

Messrs. Whiting brothers, of Paraparaumu, will probably leave shortly for Australia, where they will take up residence.

The monthly meeting of tho Otaki Road Board was held on Monday. Present: Wardens F. C. Jones (chairman), O. J. D'Ath. W. Best, A. W. Skerman, D. Xccs, and J. D. Howell. Correspondence was dealt with as follows:—From Hugh Pollen, regretting that the Minister could npt approve of the Coronation subsidy for pavilion and dressing-room.—Received. From the Railway Department, stating a level crossing at the south end of tho Otaki railway station would cost .£6o.— Decided . to secure further information. From the Horowhenua County Council, stating that it had agreed to contribute £60 towards tho cost of the, Manakau crossing.—Decided to give a similar amount and to request the Government to do the work at once. From Bell, Gully, and Cooper (Palmerston North), enclosing .£1 4s. 2d. for rates on Mr. D. Mathcson's property, Manakau, and stating that the land had been sold to Sir. J. J. Hills; also enclosing transfer of rate notice. From Bird Bros., drawing attention to tho state of the Manakau Road. At present, it was stated, the road past Ilildreth's was sloppy throngh surioco water, while small slips wero also causing inconvenience. They urged that something should bo done.-Decided to spend .£SO on the road. From H. Nicholson, R. L. Bacchus, J. H. D'Ath, J. H. Bacchus, Byron Brown, Ross, Cooper,.W. H. biincox, G. H. Kewson, and T. Bevan, ]nn, petitioning that the board take steps to erect two bridges over tho creeks at South Manakau. Somo years ago the board was petitioned to carry out the work, but no action was taken,'and inconvenience had been caused thereby. Ine petitioners asked that the matter be. favourably considered-Decided to apply for a .£3OO grant.
