THE HEPPLE FUND.

« LOWER HUTT SYMPATHETIC. JBIOS IN A FEW MINUTES. At tho Lower Hutt on Saturday afternoon a largely attended meeting was held in St. James's Hall, with tho object of appointing a comraitteo to manago the Hutt portion of tho llepplo fund. Mr. •E. iP. Bunny, who presided, suggested that consideration as' to the disposal of the fund might ho deferred until the lists were closed on July 31. It was gratifying, Mr. Bunny remarked, to know that people had been ready in coming- forward to.hslp. He had received communications from the Petone.Band, Mr. J. Calford. Bell, Miss-lesson, Mr. Hill, and a number of others, who,had.all expressed willingness to assist. (Applause.) Mr. J. W. Eeado stated that as to disbursements be had interviewed Mrs. Heppie, who had replied in the following letter addressed to the speaker:—

"Will you please express my grati

wle to the people for, the' sympathy nd kiudjess shown to mo and my amily in the great loss wo havo siisaiucd. In fact, such-kindness has verwhclmed me. I cannot express rhat I feel. I did not know had so many friends. . . . [ wish it to he clearly understood ;hat wheu my baby (aged seven Months) reaches'the age of 11 years, my wish winiW'fce that the remain-, ing funds, 'should go to the -benefit of the Salvation Army Children s Home, Mother Aubert's Home, and the.Presbyterian Orphanage. By no means whatever do I encourage the suggestion: of leaving. legacies, to my children from the funds raised on.mv behalf. By that time,' and with bod s help,'l feel sure that my-own girls, Mien grown up, will Ire only too j willing to help and support me. ..."

. Subsequently-it was agreed on the motion, of the Rev. Mr. Bawden Harnss, Mr. Baldwin seconding:— "That this meeting of ladies and gentlemen of the Hutt Valley expresses its deep sympathy with Mrs. Hepplo and family in their terrible sad bereavement —the loss of husband and two sous by drowning on June 22-and is in hearty agreement with tho project now before tho public to raise a sum of X'2ooo, and that a committee be appointed to confer with other committees, and representatives of subscribers as to. tho disbursoment of the fund."

Subscription lists were then handed round, and the sum of collected and promised, Mr. J. W. Bcade donating iluO, which, with Ml -is. sd. collected by the gentlemen, and .£209 collected by local ladies of tho Hutt, made a total of ,£361 4s. sd.

Messrs. C. Smith and Co., of Wellington, were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for forwarding a receipted account to the bereaved family for ,£75.

Tho following were elected to the Fund Committee:—Messrs. J. W. M'Ewan, II P. Bunny, Dr. Purdy,. P. C. Freeth, H. Baldwin, 11. W. Trotman, F. J. Pinny, J. W. Reado, Eev. Bawdcn Harriss, and the Rev. Father Lane. Mr. Heade was appointed secretary and the Key. Mr. Harriss treasurer,

Messrs. MaeMahon and Donnelly gave a sacred picture concert at their theatre last evening, the proceeds of which were devoted to the Hepple Relief Fund.' The theatre was packed, and the pictures ivere much appreciated by. the audience. The concert realised .£23 17s.

A retiring collection was taken at tlie Vivian Street Baptist Ghurcli last evening in aid of the Hopple Fund. Tho congregation contributed .£l3.

FURTHER CONTRIBUTIONS. Further contributions in aid of Mrs. Hopple, and her seven young children, who are left unprovided for through the drowning of Mr. Hepple and the two eldest sons in the harbour on Coronation Day, are to hand as under:—
