In tho second, Quill (New Zealand), beat Adams, C—3, 6—l, 6—o; Marsh beat Reid, 6-3, 6—l, 7-5.
GOLF. ENGLISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. B? Telecraph- -Press Association-Oopyriehl London, June 28. In the Open Golf Championship, first 36 holes, Scott, 158, qualified for the second staje. Clvde Pearce, 165, and Brucs Pearce, 172, both failed to ijualify. ON HOKOWHITU LINKS. ■Anything but pleasant, weather conditions prevailed on Wednesday afternoon, when a match was played on the Hokowhitu (Palmefston) golf links between teams of Pahiatua and Manawatu golfers, tho latter winning by 7j' games to 2}. Miss Sylvia Abraham was first with lOlj, handicap 23, 'net 83; Mrs. L.- Seifert second, 107—22-85; Mrs. Cecil Adams third, 121— 33-88. Tho Manawatu Club is laying out a new course at Hokowhitii, which it is hoped to have ready for the championship gathering in September. p . ■ ' BOWLS. ' ' THORNDON CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING. The president (Mr. R. W.Kane)occupied ■the chair at the annual meeting of thoThorndon Bowling Club, hold on Wednesday evening. - The annual report and :bajance-sheet .(already..:'.,published), irivfts adopted on the motion of the'chairman, who expressed tho opinion that tho resowing of tho lower green would turn out a, success. Thanks .were expressed to ■the. caretaker (Mr. Watts) for his work in that connection, and also to the generosity of Mr. Victor Dimoclc, who donated a.:new gate. Hβ mentioned that even with the iucreased subscription, the club was doing no more than paying its way. There had been no increase in membership, and to put tho finances on a proper footing they required at least ten more members than.at present, bringing i tho total up to 160. Otherwisn it , would be-necessary to increase the subscription. , The report and balance-slieet were adopted. ' - The election of officer.?'resulted as follows :—President. Mr. E. W. Seaton; vice-president.-.Mr. C. E. Chittey; directors, Messrs. T. S. Ronnld.=on. F. W. C'oombes, R. O. Peterson,' F. C. Hatch, and P. C. Corliss; lion, treasurer,' Mr. C. H. Ikfitford; delegate to the Northern Bowling Association, Mr. G. T. Mason; delegates to the Wellington Centre, Messrs. V. Dimock and D. Munro ; hon. auditor, Mr. .T. M. King. The election of a secretary was left to the incoming board. A letter was read from the Wellington Centre, ..suggesting that the pennant matches are, not. working satsfactorily, and that in their place there should be A and B pennant matches, It. would bo optional for a club to play, in either or both. The suggestion was agreed to.
.■.The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks'to tho outgoing officers; to the caretaker (Mr. Watts);" and to Mr. Seaton, for his services as engineer on hehalf of the club; and to Mr. H. A. Jaekmaii, the retiring secretory, in whose honour "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was sung. . ■. ■
