Mackenzie are expected to return to tho city this evening;. Tho Anglican Bishop of Wellington (the Right Eev T. 11. Sprott) has appointed tho undermentioned clergy to bo his examining chaplains:—Tho Von. Thomas Fancourt, Archdeacon of Wellington; the Eev. Joshua Jones, vicar of St. James's, Lower Huttj the Hev. A. M. Johnson, vicar of ,St. Mark's, Wellington. Ho has also appointed the following clergy to be his chaplains:—Tho Eev, V. 11. Kitcat, near of St. Stephen's, Marton; tho Eev. 11. Watson, vicar of St. Matthew's, Masterton.

Mr. W. S. Furby, M.1.E.E., telegraph engineer, who has retired 'in pension at his own request from tho Post and Telegraph service, after over. 16 years' service, has received from officers throughout tho service a gift of n handsomo rbllcrtop desk. Air. Furby was (ho senior oflicer of the whole Department. Educated at Christ's College, Christehurch, he joined the Telegraph Service as :i cadet early iu 1865, and the following year, at the ago of less than 17, was placed in charge of the Hokitika Telegraph Office, occupying that position for seven years during the most stirring, times of tho goldflelds. Ho also had the arduous duty of dealing with the extensive telegraph dispatches occasioned by the FrancoPiussian War in 1870, when the Panama steamers brought tho news to Hokitika, which was the first port of call. "While Mr. Ftiroy was at Hokitika, (ho provincial telegraph and staff were transferred to the General Government, and in 1873 lio was promoted to tho charge of the Blenheim ofilce, then an important transmitting centre. Tho staff under his control, all young men, comprised a largo number of tho most promising operators, and the close application necessitated by the strenuous nature of the work, and the limited and indifferent wire accommodation, made them very proficient. Many of these officers are now occupying senior positions in the service. Mr. Furby remained in Blenheim for seven years, when he was, in 18S0, appointed oflieer-in-cliargc of telegraphs at Auckland, where he was instrumental in inaugurating tho telephone exchange. After holding the position for over 20 years, Mr. Furby wa.;, in 1900, appointed electrician and inspector of telegraphs at Wellington, and returned to Auckland as telegraph engineer for the Auckland district, in MO!), which position he hold until he retired.

Tile death occurred at Waverley yesterday morning of Mr. Gerald O'Keilly, ono of the oldest and best-known settlers of that district. Deceased, who was 73 years of age, was born in County Cavan, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in his early youth. After some years of farm life at Moumahaki ho removed to Waverley, where he has resided ever since. He leaves a widow, nine sons, and five daughters.

A Gisborne resident states that he has boon informed on Rood authority that ex-Captain Knyvctt has been offered an appointment in the Chinese army.—Auckland "Herald."
