LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The postal authorities advise that the s.s. Maheno, which left Sydney at 1 P : m. on Wednesday, is bringing an Australian and English '(via Sue?.) mail. It should arrive in Wellington by llaiu Trunk express on Monday next.
After labouring strenuously for two <luys and a half the delegates to the Haspitals Conference took what one of their number described as "a whole halfholiday" yesterday afternoon. Most of the delegates" .visited' the Wellington Hospital. Dr. Hardwick Smith (medical Miperintendent) was unavoidably absent, but- tho visitors were shown over the buildings by the senior house surgeon and tho matron. A number of the delegates also accepted an invitation to visit the Ohiro Home, and were shown over that institution by tho superintendent. At lour o'clock delegates and their wives (isscmbled at Government House, where they were entertained at afternoon tea by their Excellencies, tho Governor and Lady Islington.
The evidence taken at Westport by the Collector of Custonis at the prelininary inquiry in connection with tho recent accident to the Takapuna, has been considered by (he Marine Department, and it has been decided that no further inquiry need be held.
An exhibition (industrial) is to bo held this year at Sourabaya, Java, which will open on July 3, and continue till the end of August.
Tho removal of the Queen's Statue from its present position to a new site in Kent Terrace is to be carried out by Jlr. W. J. Helyer, whose tender for the work was accepted yesterday by iho City Council. At the same meeting the council accepted the tender of Messrs. I'. R. Baillie and Co. for tho supply of transformers for (he Electric Light Department.
It is notified in the current Gazette that an area of approximately 125 acres has been taken over by the Government in the Kotorua Survey District, Auckland, under tho Scenery Preservation Act.
The current Gazette intimates that Regulation 2.), under the National Provident Fund Act, 1910, is superseded by the folloniiigr new regulation—"(l) All moneys belonging to the fund and in the bauds of tho Public Trustee shall form pnrt of the common fund of the Public Trust Office, and shall be invested by tho Public Trustee accordingly. (2) This regulation shall extend and apply to all moneys belonging to the fund and in the hands of the Public Trustee, at the date on which this regulation comes into operation (whether such moneys are already invested by the Public Trustee on mortgage or otherwise on behalf of the National Provident Fund Board or not), and all moneys so invested shall be deemed to form part of tho common fund accordingly."
An amended schedule to the regulations under the Land Transfer Act, 1908, is contained in the current Gazette.
.Tho Acting-Postmaster-General notifies in the current Gazette that no moneyorder or postal correspondence nddresred to "W. Chase, Post Office, Box 1530, Sydney," will Iμ either registered or forwarded by the Post Office of New Zealand.
A bathhouse is to bq erected at the Lyall Bay Beach in time to be used next summer. Half cost of the structure is to be charged by the City Council to tho tramways account. The estimated cost is JI2BOO. The project was approved by the City Council last evening without discussion.
The corporation plumbers are to be informed, in reply to their application for an incrcaso of wages, thai "the council cannot, pay moro than the award rates.
The City Corporation staff have been granted tho use of the Concert Chamber for their annual meeting on July 3, and tho Town and Concert Halls for their annual ball on July 21. The City. Council has been informed by its solicitor that it is not liable to tho Wellington Harbour Board in any way for tho discharge of silt into the harbour from thc.Polhill Gully and Kent Terrace,; culverts. The Harbour Board is 1 to be informed accordingly. In tho Arbitration Court yesterday Mr. O'Kegan stated that tho compensation case Payne v. Union Steam Ship Com-pany-had been settled out of Court. The case was struck out. l
