4 SEAMEN'S STRIKE SPREADS RAPIDLY. By Telecrapb-I'rcss Assoclatton-Oopyrlelit London, Juno 27. The shipping strike is spreading rapidly, and a state of confusion prevails as the shipowners at each port iiave been negotiating with the men independently of those at other ports. Many of the owners arc urging tho Shipping Federation to abandon its policy of non-intervention, nnd formulate a fixed scale of wages. If tliis is not accepted, the shipowners who arc members of the federation will lay up their | ships. The crews of three of the P. and 0. liners at Tilbury have struck. The carters nnd dockers at Liverpool have joined tlio strikers. The Pacific Line has conceded tlio senmen's and firemen's demand for an increase. Dockers at Manchester and Tyno ports have struck. Tlio fleet of colliers trading between the Tyno and Manchester is lying idle, and shipping at Sunderland is paralysed. A thousand dockers at Glasgow havo struck. Forty-one coasting shipowning firms met at Newcastle, and rejected the demand for an increase. Mr. Tom Mann, tlio well-known Labour leader, states that G5 per cent, of tho shipping firms at Liverpool havo already granted an advance of wogct, including tho Gulf Line. EMPLOYMENT OF CHINESE,
ALLEGATIONS BY MR. BEN TILLETT. London, June 27. Mr. Ben Tillett, secretary of the Dockers' Union, lias issued a manifesto, in wliicli ho -slates that forty thousand Asiatics are employed in the British mercantile marine. The Shipping Federation, ho asserts, is shipping Chinese coolics in greater nnmbers than the iOry Government shipped them during tho South African War. Mr. Tillctt declares that tho leading Literal financiers demand this as tho price of supporting the Liberal party. MORE SHIPOWNERS GIVE WAY. (Rec. June 28, 10.45 p.m.) London, June 28. The Carters' Union and tho Dock Labourers' Union at Liverpool have decided not to handle goods belonging to firms involved in the seamen's strike. As a result of this action a number of shipowners have conceded the men's demands. POSITION IN AMSTERDAM. (Rec. June 28, 10.45 p.m.) Amsterdam, Juno 29. Work is at a standstill on twenty out of thirty-five steamers in port.
