PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

■ 1 The fortnightly meeting of the I'etone Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Petone, last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr. J. W. M'Kwan, and Councillor* Short, Lisl, Hrocklchank, Cox. liodder, Uurridge, Trueumn, Piper, and Wakehani. It was decided Io keep (he ladies' ivad-ing-roonr at the Public Library open all day. Tho Mayor announced that copies of tho estimates for the year would be distributed on Wednesday, and it was decided to call a meeting of the council on Juno 30 to consider them. A report was received from tho Reserves Committee recommending various improvements to the Recreation Ground. Several of the recommendations w<?re adopted, suck as the provision of seating accommodation, provision of gates, Iwautifyiuj tho grounds, etc. Councillor Burridge considered that the time had arrived for making the grounds a little more attractive, and he trusted that, before long, the council would movo in the matter. A letter was received from Mr. J. P. Allen offering the council the choice of three lots of land on which to erect the proposed Cottage Hospital. Tho communication was referred to tho. Cottage Hospital Committee. During a discussion on tho caso. of a. Man—an Italian who had boon prosecuted for failing to register his dog, although he had paid the registration fee one or two days before- the court sat—Councillor Piper remarked that men of some social standing in the town had also been prosecuted, but, on payment of tho fee. Iho cases had been withdrawn. They should not make fish of one and flosh of another —it was not justice. He moved_ that a sub-committee bo set up to inquire into the circumstances.—The motion was carried. Councillor Short moved: "That the engineer be aslted to furnish an estimate of the probable cost of putting the whole of the borough streets in fir« Mass order (including the tarring of Hull Road), provision of water channels, alterins: all .street corners, widening Gasworks Hoad and Riddler's Crescent, and other improvements Io be .detailed. Also that a street-improvement lean be raised _to cover cost of same.-AHer some discussioa the motion was rejected, pending consul oration of Hie sewage scheme.
