SUNDAY CONCERT.

THE GARRISON BAND.

: Under the - conductorship of Lieut. Herd last evening, tho Wellington Garrison Band gave a very enjoyable concert in the Town Hall. Tho attendance was large. For an opening selection tho "Coronation March" (Meyerbeer) was given, preceded by a, "fanfare for cornets," which proved effective and very appropriate. Tho hand's next contribution was an overture ("If I were King") by Adams, which was very creditably played, but their most popular item was the air, with variations, "nandon," whicli had a delightful broad and harmonious treatment. Only a -little faultiness in tuno was noticeable in the first few opening bars, otherwise both tune and tone wcro oxecllent. The concluding item was the rousing, march "Under Freedom's Banner" (Von BIou). Miss May Newman, who was well received, sang "A Spring Morning" (Neviii),. and the well-known. "Rosary"'(Nevin), as bracketed numbers, both being tastefully rendered, and she gavo as an encoro number "April, April" (by Clarke). Mr. H, N. Fletcher (tenor) gave an extremely good rendering of that delightful,' though somowhat taxing, jong, "I Hear You Calling Me" (by Marshall), tho audience loudly demonstrating their pleasure. Mr. Fletcher gavo as an encore another tiretty item, "Roses" .(Adams). Mr. C. Clarkson, who has become a Sunday evening favourite, sang (by request) "Tho Better Land." and later on "Crossing tho Bar" (Gower), both contributions enhancing the singer's popularity. For an encore to his second song, Mr.. Clarkson sang "I Know Not Why" (Bingham), a song now to Wellington audiences. The occomnonimenfs were tastefully played by Mr. Hollow.
