DR. JOWETT AND THE PRESS.

MISSTATEMENTS CORRECTED. The Rev.' ,T. 11. Jowett writes as follows to the "Daily Ncws":Sir,—My attention has been drawn- to the fact that much publicity has been given certain statements regarding my settlement in this city. After some consideration I have reluctantly come to tho conclusion to correct these statements, and then to leave .tin subject, alone. Perhaps thov will be regarded, as typical of the flippant way in which fictions and inaccuracies get into the daily press. Mav 1 just take them one by one? 1." It is said that "ten days' expenenco of the high cost of living in New York" has convinced mo that the £2-100 is not moro than enough. I have not in the slightest degree altered the judgment I formed in England, and my resolution remains the same. 2. It is said that the trustees have taken a house at a rental of JCIGOO. This is a gross and grotesque exaggeration. It it said that the house "looks into Central Park." It is a homely and comfortable liohss in a side street, and from none of the windows can a single square yard of the park be seen. 3. It is said that "an admiring committee has presented Dr. Jowott with' a beautiful motor-car." This is pure, or impure, fiction. There is no truth in it. 1 wonder if this will put an end to this sort of "news." 1 can scarcely' suppose it will. I shall not bo surprised any day to find the intelligence that my new congregation have arranged for mo to hnvo the private use of Central Park, and that they have lib'ught-au eighteen-holo golf course for thh: solo'and exclusive .benefit of their'minister! J. H. JOWETT. '
