PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
p (From Our Special Corresuondent.) Palmerston, June 22. Tho annual meeting of the Palmerston Firo Board was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. 13. J. Armstrong (chairman), J. A. Nash, C. A. Kwen, J. J. Mallard, F. Mowlcm, and W. T. Wood. Mr. Armstrong was re-elected chairman, The superintendent was directed to enter strong protest against the new hall on tho Manawatu A. and P. Showground being used for any other purpose than that for which it' had been licensed. Tho question of tho water-supply for. fire prevention purposes at the showgrounds was also discussed, and tho superintendent was instructed to draw up a report. •_ Tho motor-cyclo reliability race, over a course between here and Wanganui.last week was won by A. Jack. A. Hall was second, and W. Passmorc third. Mrs. H. It was decided, that a. women's crusade should be. set on foot, .a number of those present writing 'their names in tho "crusade" book. ' ■
.Mr. C. Cuming, of Wellington, presided over a meeting.of utility : poultry breeders last evening. After discussion, it was decided to form a North Island Utility; Poultry Society, and a Provisional Committee (Messrs. G. Finn, D v Inman-Todd, and A. Muntly) was set up to take steps to organise tho movement. The annual meeting of the National Sweet' Pea "Society was held last night, Mr. J. Goring-Jonnston being in the chair. The balance-shcot showed s cash credit of ,£9 135., and trophies in hand to the value of -.£l2O. A vote of thanks was passed,to the secretary (Air. Osmond) for bringing about this satisfactory result. Tho following motions were passed:—(l) That entrance fees for classes in which the trophies are over .£2O, bo doubled to non-members; (2) that a lady's ticket bo allowed to each member, one admission only; (3) that the different societies in tho Dominion bo requested to affiliate with this association. Messrs. Osmond, Fox, and Trevcthick jvere empowered to draft rules and submit them to the committee for approval. The framing of the prize schedule- for the next show was left to Messrs.' Goodson, Osmond, and Dr. Carberry. Tho secretary reported that a strong ladies' committee (with Mrs. L. A. Abraham as president) had been formed. Messrs. Allen. Fox, and Trevcthick were appointed judges for all clnssos, and the following local committee was set up — Messrs. A. C. Bradford, G. W. Keeling, J. Goring-Johnstou, F. Mason, and 'T. Rodgers. '
Money, to the amount of £39 in gold, belonging to Mr. J. Hurley, of the Kailway Hotel., was stolen yeslvrday, and today a mna named M'Convillo was arrested by Detective Quirko on a chareo of being concerned in tho theft. A further sum of .£4O is said to have br-en stolen from a local fishmonger, and the matter is being investigated. A sharp and prolonged shook of earthquake was felt here at 2.15 this morning.
