Cowboys, revolvers, and ether heroic circumstances helped the play which was staged by Mr. William Anderson's-Dra- , malic Company at tho Opera House last evening to wiri a high place in the regard of tho audience. Allene Houston has' inherited from her father the Black Sticke Ranch, in Texas, and there she rules over and is worshipped by a , force of stalwart and picturesque cowboys. The lato Mr. Houston had had n l'eiid with a. railroad company which claimed the right to carry a branch line through the ranch. The heiress carries out his policy of obstruction,. and when the young engineer who has loved her for fifteen years, is sent •to ■ Texas to build, the. branch line in sixty days—a time-limit which no money wjll induce Alleno (o, extend—there is open, war between the ranch and the railroad. ■ After a series of thrilling incidents, including the imprisonment of the railroad president, his secretary, the surveyor, and Ashley, the engineer, on tho ranch, events suddenly take a new turn. Oh the night when the struggle reaches its climax Harry, the ranch foreman, is shot in an encounter with the railway men. Just as he is dying, he shoals Ashley. It.is a crime of jealousy, for Harry also loves "the boss" of the. ranch. In the last scene the engineer is convalescent, and it is not necessary to state who has nursed him back to life. She has also completed the railway for him, and the final curtain falls upon the scene which everybody expected. ■ - Miss Beatrice Day gave a fine exposition of the part of Alleno Houston, .and was especially strong in the- emotional passages: Mr. Harry Roberts as John Ashley was every inch a hero, -and much above the conventional type. Miss-Ethel Bahsford was very lively and natural as Allone's volatile friend Lily Belle, while Miss Du I'ere gave an admirable comedy performance as Milly. the black- deafmute maid: Mr Herbert Leigh was forcible enough as Happington, the railroad president,' and Mr. J'. G. Thorpe as his secretary was ijnitc ?. success. Mr. Kenneth Brampton made Harry, the ranch foreman, seem 'like a very real person. Messrs. Fred.. Coape, Victor Fitzhorbort, and Mr. Frank Peachv a? various 1,-ivds of company directors, Mr. Clive Faniham' as the vouh" surveyor, Messrs.- W. Daleieisli, H. Power, F. -Rcssmere, R. J. Oswald, and F. Hoado as the loyal and nicturesque cowboys, and Master V. Smith as a page, were nicely in tho. picture- ■ "Right is Might'' will be repeated Ihis evening. •
