THE EXHIBITION.
* _ YESTERDAY'S DOINGS, BOXING TOURNEY AT THE STADIUM AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS., Last evening at the Exhibition Stadium tho Wellington Boxing Association brought off the preliminary heats of their annual championships. A good "gale" rewarded tho association and the Exhibition authorities for their enterprise, and everything went off without a hitch. Owing (o the absence of Mr. W. G. Talbot, much of tho management'of the tournament fell upon the shoulders of Mr. T. Sampson and Mr. Bay. The-* ollicials, ably assisted by other members of tho committee, lulfilled their duties in a manner which left nothing to bo desired, and although, as is usual in the preliminary heats, the boxing was hardly up to "Australasian" form, the spectators saw much to admiro and, occasionally, much to amuse. Dr. Napier MacLcan officiated as referee, Tho following arc tho results:— .Light-weight, Semi-final. M'Carthy (Ost. 111b.) mot Valentine (9st. 131b.). . Valentine mode Ike pace from the sound of the gong, but, owing to M'Carlby|s guard being well maintained, many of his leads never reached their goal'. In the second round M'Carthy livened things up. aud, his opponent's form failing, landed a right to the eve. Valentine threw up his hands, and the referee stopped tho contest, and awarded tho decision to M'Carthy. Welter-weight, Semi-final. Coldv, Wellington (lust. 81b.) met Murphy, Wellington (lflst. Gib). Coi'dy had the advantage in height and reach, tnd started in to make the pace a "cracker." Murphy, however, ducked and. slipped all his leads, and, as opportunity offered, reached his opponent's face with a well-timed and weighty left. Recognising his antagonist's superior 6kill and form, Coddy threw in the towel at tho' end of the first round. Murphy lias a good punch in either hand, and saves himself, until occasion arises, to uso it. Feather-weight, Semi-final. Ellis, Wellington (Sst. lllb.), met Ingham, Wellington (Sst. 91b.). ' Ellis showed too much knowledge of ringcraft f,ir his slighter opponent, and hustled bin-,'round the ring, finally sending him to, the ropes with a hard, right swing to xm jaw. Dr. MacLpan_ here warned Ingham not to hold, and, in a "rough-up" a moment later, threatened to disqualify him for a repetition of the offence. Ingham erred again, and was promptly disqualified, leaving Ellis the winner. Although outclassed, tho loser displayed gamoness against long oddß, Middle-weight, Semi-final, i Tancred, Pctonc: (list.), met Gillray, Wellington (lOst. 1311).). Both men opened well, and kept points fairly even until the cud of the first round, when the IVlono man crossed a hard right to tho jaw. In the Eecond round Tancred gradually increased the slight lead which he held, and retired to his corner with a margin in baud. Tho final round livened Gillray up, but Tancred met him well, aud ndded a few more points to his score. , Tancred Uie winner. . Light-weight, ■ Semi-final. Wilson, Wellington. (9sh ■ -41b.) met Fabling, Wellington (Ost.. 71b.). This proved to l>c tho best bout of tho evening, and aroused great interest among the spectators. Wilson adopted a crouch, and used n snappy upper-cut as 'opportunity offered'. Also, there wero glimpses of a "loop-the-loop" which found a mark on more thaa one occasion. This hoy's boxing was most, precise, and his blocking was somo of the prettiest seen hero for some time. Fabling's forto was a hard straight left, alternated with a right swing, either of which against a man less skilled must have worked havoc. Fabling's leading gave him a small margin in hand when the gong sounded after round No. 1, nnd, althdu'gh'Wilson, reduced thn lead in the second, Fabling still held tho major points at tho finish. Taking his second's'advice in the final round, Wilson forced tho pace, and scoring with a sharp upper-cut to the jaw ho followed up smartly and laid his opponent, hors-de-combat with a right half-arm jolt. The winner received a round of cheeriiig on leaving tho ring. Heavy-Wcight. Freeman, Petone, met Hunter, Wo'lington.
The first round was tame, Hunter forcing the pace, albeit a bit wildly'. Freeman livened up for a moment at fiio commencement of tho second, but Hunter continued to load, although most of his swings wero taken on the gloves or missed by yards. The third round was practically .a repetition of iho second, Hunter still forcing. Freeman tho winner. ' Middle-Weight, Semi-final. O'Brien (lOst. 71b.) met Clifford (list.). Clifford got the decision after a burlesquo which kept the spectators in Toara from gong to gong. Bantam, Final. "■ ■ Kutner (Bst. 21b.) met Joplin,(Bst. lib.). Kutner forced the pace, but was well met by Jopliu, who "demonstrated" a straight left with varying success. Kutner was warned sovcrnl times for holding, and, in tho hitter rounds, desisted. Kutner continued to lead, but tho decision went to Joplin, which was rather hard luck for Kutner. ENGLISH PIERROTS. ; • Those lively entertainers, the English' Pieuots, were again fairly well patronised last evening, • when they appeared in a varied programme, that was good in. every part. Songs, rendered with expression and skill, altcrnata with tho merely fun-provoking items, and combine with them to constitute an entertainment that, for all-round merit, would take a lot of beating. The pictures screened during tho afternoon were accorded a satisfactory weed of patronage. A notice to competitors in the bowling tournament at the Exhibition appears elsewhere in this issue. The naval spovis meeting, nostponed from last Wednesday, will be held in tho Stadium on Monday evening next. ; Tho turnstiles at tho Exhibition yesterday recorded an attendance of 3737 visitors, bringing the nggrcgato total attendance since the opening, up to 85,671. Tho cash takings amounted to ,£193 2s.
