4. SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, Juno 21. A serious accident occurred at tlio en< trance to Lyttelton Tunnel last night, when Henry Mills, employed in the railway yard at Lyttelton, came close to losing his life. Mills, who is an experienced railway hand, had been in the habit of riding on trains from Lyttelton Station to tho signal-box, a few chains distant. Last night ho overran the usual place for dropping off, and did not jump till at tho mouth of tho tunnel. He was dashed against a buttress, and fell under tlio wlieels of the train, which nearly severed his right leg and caused other injuries. ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES. . 1 THE DEATH OF LYE CHEONG. An inquest was hold at tho morgue yesterday afternoon by the City Coroner (Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) concerning tho death of a Chinese,' named Lyo Clieong, 'who died suddenly at 27 Haining Street, on Tuesday night. Sergeant Rutledge, of tho Mount Cook Station, represented tho police. Doceasd, it appeared from the evidence of Chinese witnesses, was a gardener, 57 years of age, and-had been a resident of Palmerston North. Ho cauio down to Wellington -with his cousin on Tuesday afternoon in order lo receive medical attention, and to see if a subscription could bo raised to send hini homo to China. .Ho„,w;as . then affected by a cough, but otherwise appeared to bo in his usual stato of health. When ho arrived at 27 iHivining,Street at 5 p.m., ho "went to lio down" and, as his condition became bad later in tho evening, Dr. Elliott was summoiled. By tho time that' tho'doctor arrived. tho man was.dead. Tho police found a- quantity of opium among his effects, but a witness stated that ho had not seen deceased 6nioking opium at Palmerston North. Dr. W r . Kington Fyffe, who mado a post mortem, stated that deceased was very emaciated. There were no external marks other than a slight scratch on tho chin. There was, however, a largo goitre on the chin and, in tho aesophagus, was a shilling, which had evidently been placed in deceased's mout'h after death. Tho condition of tho left lung showed him to havo been in the last stage of pneumonia, and there woro indications of heart and liver disease. The cause of death was syncope from pneumonia with secondary disease of tho valves of the heart, and marked enlargement of tho right ventricle. Tho Coroner: Would.you say that the man was physically starved?—" Well, I don't know,' but I should think that ho was an opium smoker, and-took veiy little to eat. The. diseaso would not account for his extreme emaciation." A verdict was returned in accordance with tho medical testimony. ,A FATAL COLLISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Gisborne, Juno 21. An inquest was held to-day on tho Maori Waru Tohirere, who was killed by a trap accident at Makaraka (a suburb) last Saturday night. Tho evidence showed that the Maori, who was riding fast in the opposite direction, collided with u (rap driven by Mr. St. Clair. The unfortunato man was impaled on the shaft of tho trap, which penetrated his leg übovo tho knee, and camo out near his hip. Whilo hanging tljere head - down-wards-he was badly kicked and trampled on by tho horse in the trap, and to theso injuries liis death was chiefly attributable. A verdict of accidental death was returned. CEMENT-MIXER COMES DOWN. Hastings, June 21. A heavy cemont-raixing board fell from a scaffolding to-day on Robert O'Kane, a contractor, fracturing his collarbone and breaking his ribs. It is feared that a rib penetrated tho left lung. He lies in a serious condition in a private hospital.
