SANITARY INSPECTORS.

QUESTION OF SALARY. At tho meeting of tho Hospital Board yesterday a discussion arose on tho following motion, of which notice had been given by Jlr. J. Trevor:— That tho resolution that two health • inspectors bo employed at the rato of XWS per annum, with travelling ox- . penses, passed by tho board at its meeting on May IC,'bo rescinded. Mr. Trevor said he understood ho was in a "very large minority" on this question, but ho was there to do the best ho could. Tho salaiy of £)Sb a year which it was proposed to offer was too high. A sum of JJISO a year should bo ample. Tho board in offering tho larger salary was needlessly piling up the expenses. Ono man had offered to take tho job of inspector at. £1 a week. While that was far too little, tho members of tho board, in their oflicial capacity, wore foolishly pushing -wages up. Mr. Trevor moved tho motion standing in his name, and intimated that ho would move that applications be invited for the position of inspector at a salary of .£l5O a year. Mr. Tompsitt seconded the motion. The chairman (Ecv. W. A. Evans) said the qualifications required in- iho inspectors were higher than had been indicated by Mr. Trevor, and involved a very high degree of culture. A knowledge of chemistry, sanitation, and other matters was demanded. Mr. London said it had been made clear lhat these sanitary inspectors would fulfil responsible duties over a wide district. They would bo called upon to act for local Authorities in districts adjacent to "Wellington. Tho salaiy offered was by no means excessive. The Eev. H. Van Stavercn said men of ability and training were required. They ■would not be obtained at a salary of .£l5O a year. . The motion was lost on the voices. It was agreed that applications bo invited for th» positions of two health inspectors, salaries to be at the rato of .£lB5 a year. Tho Public Health Committee and the medical superintendent were empowered to make tho appointments.
