. LORD ISLINGTON'S , VISIT. (By Telegraph.—SDecial Correspondent.! Palmerston, June 19. ' A very ' large number of people assembled at the band rotunda this afternoon to. tako part iu the ivclconio t6 lus the Governor on his first ofliCial visit to Palmerston. Lord Islington was mot at the station by tho Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) and councillors, Mi-. A. Conway (chairman of the A. and P. Association), and Major Dunk (chairman of the 'National. Dairy Show Committee). On arrival at tho rotunda the Mayor extended a hearty welcome to the Governor. ' Mr. D. Euick, M.P., and Captain ■Havdon (president of the Chamber of Commerce) also added words of welcome. All address was also read by the Town Clerk (Mr. W. 11. Collingwood). Lord Islington repliod expressing gratification at the welcome, arid also expressed pleasure at being able to attend the National Dairy Show, which he was to open. The function concluded With cheers. At a meeting of the local Holiday Association to-day, it was unanimously decided to observe Coronation Day. as a holiday, and to close on the Prince of Wales' Birthday. It was also decided to rescind a previous resolution to close on the afternoon of tho day on which the. Sheffield Choir visits Palmerston, unless the orchestra accompanies the choir. Much dissatisfaction is expressed at the decision of the management that the orchestra will not be heard in Palmerston. The town is now beginning to look quite lively. Many show visitors have already arrived, and the business people are decorating their premises for Coronation Day. It is said that about .£'2so is-to be spent on decorating the local post office.
At the Police Court to-day, a motor cyclist named Herbert . Wood was fined 10s. and costs for riding on a cycle track. Several parents were fined for not sending their children to school. The • Manawatu Savage Club gave the first "ladies' night" of the current season on Saturday night at tho Municipal Hall, which was prettily decorated for the occasion. There was a large attendance, and 'l'oa W. F. Durward presided. About two hours were devoted to music, srng, and story, and several amusing topical items were given. The programme was contributed to by Messrs. 11. Fellowes, H. L. Young, E. S. Pees, A. A. Martin, J. A, Nash, F. Attmore, J, Rogers, A. E. Bennett, E. G. Money, Scott, AVoolhouse, • Tabor, and De Lods.e (of Nelson). The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Vaughan and Messrs. G. W. Naylor and De Looze. A danco was held afterwards. During the course of his sermon at All Saints on Saturday the Rev. 11. G. Roscher made interesting reference to the Coronation ceremony. At St. Patrick's Church, tho Rev. Father Costello read a circular from the Catholic Archbishops and Bishops of the Dominion, enjoining their congregations to take part in the Coronation celebrations. A deputation of local bodies interested in the Manawatu Gorge Road will wait -en-- the Minister for Public Works on : Wednesday in Wellington, with tho objeet*'of endeavouring to induce the-Gov-ernment to take over the maintenance of that thoroughfare. Messrs. D. Buick, G.' Newman. D. H. Guthrie, B. Eoss, and W. H. Field. M.P.'s. will be with tho representatives of the local bodies, the latter comprising the County Councils of Kairanga, Oroua, and Woodville, and tho Borough Councils of Palmerston, Feildiiig, Woodville. and Pahiatua.
Over 100 registrations came in last week in I'almerstpn in connection with the military, training scheme. The total to. date is 1170. • The. services at the local Bapt'st Church on. .Sunday were conducted by fhe Kev. Air. Carlisle, of Elthain.
