HOLSTEIN-FRIESIANS, MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. ' > The. annual meeting of the New Zealand. Holstein-Friesian Association was held at the secretary's oflice, Cuba Street, Palmerston North, last evening-. Present; Messrs. Coleman Phillips (Carterton, in the chair), Harold and J. li. Street (Bell Black, T'aranaki), M'Nair (Matapiata), Gallichan (Eketnhuna), J. Liggins (Tokomaru); J. Donald (Wanganui), J. H. Parkinson (Opotiki), F. Adamson (Paeroa), p., Leonard (Reineura), Buckeridge (Carter-; ton), A. K. Alexander (Paeroa), A. M'Phee, (Carterton), O'Nc-il (Featherston), M. O'Connor (Linton), .1. Drysdalo (Lovin* State Farm), W. 11. Bayliss (Mangatai-, noka), C. Bopping (Gl»n Oroua), Wills (Aokautere), Wright (Agkautcre), and . JJemnant' (WoodvilU). The chairman, in the course of his opening remarks, stated that he was pleased' Iq report that over 700 animals had been entered in the first Herd Book of the. association. . Another pleasing feature was (ho membership, which, at present, numbered 73. He considered that the support accorded the association was sufficient to warrant an Existing Committee being setup. He. also dealt with the very sound financial position of tho association, . .. The president gave notice to move the following motion: "That, in view of the fact that North America has imported tome 10,00 ft head of Holstein-Friesians cattle from Holland since 187,' i, without any outbreak of foot and mouth disease, the Government should remove the embargo from New Zealand. The long voyage and subsequent three months in quarantine here are ample protection." The mover and -Messrs. Hopping and Buckeridge spoke of the great difficiilly of obtaining stock from Holland. • Jt was decided, on the motion of Mr. ! Leonard, that the time of closing the entries for the Herd Book be June 30. The meeting then adjourned till this morning.
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY. In an interview, Mr. Cuddie, the Dairy Commissioner, stated that the number of exhibits in tlio classes for factory butter were in excess of those of last year, and the competition in every class was very keen. Continuing, he said: The quality all round is equal to the standard seen at 'i previous J'almerston North shows. Tho great majority of the exhibits are in firstclass condition. Tho outstanding feature is the uniformity in the finality, as will bo noted from tho pointing. Only a very few entries were found to be seriously defective in flavour, while the body untf texture are evidence of very careful work on tho part of the makers. As usual, the butter was submitted to a somewhat severe test as to its keeping qualities; some of it being held in store for. aver three tnoatK If this can be
taken as an indication of the way iu .Which Xou Zealand butler opens. up nl Home, it should. lie indeed idt'ii=iiiji In Ihf merchant and■ the consuinoi. »f Ihe butler was sperially made for show purposes, ftic cxcevilion being the butler selected from that sent in for frratliiifr and export.. In this class the exhibits were I found to be of a very satisfactory character all through. Mr. W. Singleton, the Department's cheese' pert, states that, as a whole, the f|Ua!ity of the cheese exhibits is fully up lo thai of previous show?. While the best cheese may not have scored any lusher, the standard of the poorer exhibits is a decided improvement on those nf some previous shows. The flavour of the best exhibits leaves little to be desired, and the score for body and texture is very satisfactory. A number of the exhibits would, however, have scored higher in this connection had they been closer in body. The competition for the prizes in the classes for tho pairs and loaves was especially good, and a good deal of difficulty was experienced in selecting tho prize-winners. Only a small proportion of the exhibits scored full points for finish, and there seems to be some room for improvement in tho get-up of sliow cheese.' Unseasoned timber lias been used for the cases in a number of instances, and. this has left a stain on the end or the side of the exhibits. Somewhat more tidiness could also be effected in the dressing. In si number of instances too much bandage is permitted to lajf over the end,, but the quality as a whole is very creditable to the factory managers.
