GREAT MISSIONARY MEETING
WESLEYAXS AT THE ALBERT HALL. The annual meeting of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society at the Albert Rail. London, on May 1, was a most inspiring gathering. The huge building was packed with people from tho arena to the (pi; gallery. On tho platform wore hundreds of missionaries and other lninisJers, including- the president of the conference, the Rev. John Hornabroolc, and distinguished laymen. Behind them was the choir.of 500 voices, which rendered a fino programme of music: Tho opening sentences of the brief but pointed statement of (he deputy-treasurer, the Itev. Marshall Hartley, called forth hearty applause. "There are 1000 more members in onr churches abroad than wo had last year,'' he said.' "Our churches abroad have given JMOflfl mowi for the spreading of the Gospel about them than they did in the previous year. There are great possibilities of development, glorious openings, if we had the means to enter on them. . But— -". At.this stage-,,Mr. Hartley's tone changed. Tho income had showed a deficit of ,£"100 on (he year'.? working, rather more than the deficit of the previous year, which has not been dealt with, and to-clav'the society is in debt about ,-r:7. r .no. "Nothing but good can be said of, the work abroad, but what is the matter with ihe Oburch at home?" asked Mr. Hartley. "This is (ho matter. Th«> bulk of our people arc not interested in this work as they ought to be. Jso sense of dti.tv in the matter has come to them from listening ro Him Who is the Lord of duty. Wo want, if we can. to open windows in their souls. Our neoplo have not yet a vision of this work. Our prayer may well be, 'God, give us eyes to see!'"
