DR. JOWETT'S HOPES.

MESSAGE TO'CAKKS LANE. A letter from Dr. J. H. Jewell was read at tlio church meeting at. Cam Lane Chapel, Birmingham, recently, by (ho secretary, Mr. G, A. Pago. In it Dr. Jowett says:— "Of course wo have not yet emerged from the initial excitement that waits upon a man's new ministry, but I think thing.? are quietening down, and I shall soon know the sphere as it really is. Wo have been received with extreme kindnesses, and even t!io American newspapers have been very gracious to us. One great change I have already experienced is this: t'hat Bishop Greer, tho Bishop of New York, has asked me to speak in tho Cathedral next Sunday night. You will sec that this indicates a change of spiritual climate which I deeply appreciate. The Episcopal clergy of the city hove been very gracious to me, many of them having called upon me. On these last Sundays tho congregations have been enormous, numbering as many as fIOOO people. It is not tho crowd that cheers me. but tho spirit of the people of the Fifth Avenue Church. You will be glad to know that there is not a singlo item in tho service which I desire to have changed. There is very much of what we had at Carrs Lane. There is a quiet spirit' of. reverence ami order, and.for this I am very grateful. We had our first week-night service last week. I think this will probably be my greatest problem. The mid-week' services in New York are very badly attended. I shall give steedy strength' t'o this service, and hope in time it will become as sweet and cheerinir to mo as the services at Carrs Lane. It is something worth working for, and certainly deserves one's entire devotion."
