BIG CATCHES OF TROUT.

ASTONISHING FIGUEES;

/By TelesraDh.-SDeciai CorresDondent.l

„,,. ■. ' , Auckland, June 15. ■I he wonders of the fishing waters in the vicinity of Lake Taupo have been fully illustrated by tho marvellous catches of trout reported this season. One of the finest tallies-is: that of Mr. A. D bhilson, who, during the season, caught 1611 fish,-of an average weight of 91b., each. Tho total weight of the fish caught by this angler amounted to 11,4771b., about five tons. His best day's fishing was '42 hsh, weighing 4191b. Mr. Shilson, who has fished in most places, considers thero is no fishing in the world like that to be obtained at Taupo, cither for brown or rainbow trout Ho has experience of English and Scottish waters, nnd states that ho never got such fishing. In speaking of this season's sport, he said that the fish were larger and in better condition than last season. The sport wns not very good early in tho season. He favoured the Tongariro Eiver, whose waters were rapid and the sport consequently better. The fish were better fighters than' those in the Western Bay, and more like tho English and Scottish trout. The Government will have to do something before long_ to thin out the trout, Mr. Shilson considers. As yet, he said, there was no need to do so, but in time the lake will become more largely stocked and tho fish, will then deteriorate. Tho Government could earn a considerable revenuo by buying or catching fish, and smoking them, and then dispatching them to different parts of the Dominion.
