Tho South Auckland Rugby Union, replying to a union communication regarding their proposed match with Auckland, said that tho date would b* about tho i end oi August. It was dccided to ask the South Auckland Union to communicate with Auckland, and definitely fis a date. The Auckland Union wrote intimating that,,.owing to inter-union matches and a southern tour, it would be impossible to • play shield matches until the latter end i of August,' and matches' had already been i arranged for August. 5 and. 12. It would, , therefore,' be .necessary to. fix dates for ; later than August 15 should the union d-ccide on any shield 'matches > being played.—lt was decided to write to . Auckland stating that the South Auck* land challenge had been sanctioned- , • Proposed Maori Tour. Corrr.-pondfr.co from Mr. W. T. I Recently the English Union notified the i New Zealand Union that it had been decided to grant New South Wales, Queensland, and New Zealand a seat on the . by-laws sub-committee. . At its last meeting the Management Committee decided to write to tho New South Wales and the Queensland Unions, suegesting thai * Mr. C. Wray Palliser. of. New Zealand. ( should be the wmwtftirf : unions. New Sonth Wales ropllctl statins ; that it was not sure whether each union is to have ono 'representative, or whether . one man was to represent tho three. If • tjie latter was the case, they were agree- : aW® to l!r. Palliser being the representa- : tive.' Point in Professionalism. A telegram from Paeroa asked: "Is a (•ecretaTy of . a Northr/.'n Union League classed as a provisional ?" Football Without a Ball. The committee had an unusual case before them during the course of the meeting. Two South Canterbury clubs, Zinand Athletic met to fulfil, a .fixture. There was no ball, and the referee declared the frame "off." .The South Canterbury. Union subsequently disqualified the home team (Eingari) for not providing the ball. •"' Against this decision Zingari appealed to the New Zealand Union. At tho meeting of the committee last night there was a good deal of talk about* the "unwritten law of tho home team providing the ball."'. On this score, those who thought that neither team should be compelled to forfeit the match, favoured upholding the appeal. Others proposed to dismiss the appeal on the ground that they .had no power to interfere with local in such cases. The decision 'come to was that tho appeal shonld be dismissed. It is prof>ablo that the case will lead to a' rule being framed. THE TEAMS FOE TO-MOEEOW. Tho following will represent various clubs ojj city and suburban grounds tomorrow.— Petono Club. Senior v.' BILLIARDS.
AUSTRALIA STILL TO THE FRONT. By Toleeraßli-l'rtss Associatian-Copyrleh! London, Juno 14. The score in the billiard match between George Gray, the Australian, and Melbourne lnmtsji now stands:— Gray 11,917 Inman 0,321 Gray's lead 5,596 Gray's score included a break of 1105. REECE'S VIEW OF GRAY. In view of George Gray's remarkable performances in England, and in the light of T. moro recent experience in his game against the other Australian exponent of tho losing hazard, Fred. Lindrum, jun., the views of Reece uDon the standing of these two boys in the world of billiards becomes of exceptional interest. Asked last week as to Gray s position. Reeco replied: "Under the present rules, and playing with composition balls, Gray, in ray opinion, can concede one-third of the game to any living player, with the one nossiblo exception of Lindrnm, ivho=e proficiency at the red-ball trick might roduce the proportion of the' start. But surely one-third of the game, say, 8000 points'in 24,000, is a big difference to bo accounted for solely by a chantre from the composition to the ivory ball? "It is not so much when you know and have been brou.eht np to study the behaviour of ivory balls for 20 or 23 years. I Ho not believe that Gray's'col-s----ssl Tiinr, off tho red would be possible with ivory balls." Of course, Gray will win the next championship? "Of that I can form no definite opinion, nor can anyone else, until we have seeu how Gray gets on with ivory ball?. Hehas two difficulties to ert over, first the ivory balls and next H. W. Stevenson, r.nd both uro very considerable."
