TRAMWAY EXTENSION.
» MINISTER'S CONSENT AWAITED. Councillor Shirtcliffo asked at the City Council 1 J , ' night what was tho reason for the de.v.y in starting 'the Molesworth. Street tramway extension. He understood that the requisite Ordcr-in-Couneil had not yet been issued. Yet at the close of last year, the Mayor staled that the work would be begun at the end of January, It was not begun even now. The City Engineer (Mr. W. 11. Morton) said the point that was troubling the Public Works Department was the position at the junction of Charlotte Street and Lambtoii Quay. Tho plan showed a space of Hit. Gin. between the rails and the pavement, at the corner, and the . space higher up was 20ft, 'Die Department desired to have it 20ft. at tho corner also. He had pointed out the difficulties in the way of making such a. change in the plans, and had mentioned that it would bo found unsuitable when the Bunny Strcet-Featherston Street connection was made later on. The special work for the intersection had been imported, and was here now, but would be unsuitable if the desired alterations h.irl to bo made. He had further suggested that tho best w;iy of providing the desired additional space would be to further widen (lie street at (ho corner. Somo of the Public Works Department officials agreed with this, but I lie Minister's consent was required, and nothing l>eyond that had been heard of it. He had had two or three interviews with the Depart" mental officials.
