AN INTERESTING BOOK.
Mrs. Hewett, widow of the late Captain Howett, has. written a very interesting little book entitled "Looking Back," being a record of her experiences in the early days in New Zealand, says a Hawke's Ihy exchange. She arrived in Nelson in 1853, with her father nnd mother, and soon became, personally acquainted with the special exigencies of an early settler's life. Threo weeks after ' her fifteenth birthday she married Mr. James Hewett, better known as Captain Hewett, C.H. Her husband niet his death at the hands of tho Han Hans at Kai Turi. Tho Natives carried their victim's head before them, also his heart. Some years atterwards those remains were discovered by Archbishop Willinms of Te Aute, and placed in Capiain Hewctt's grave. In consideration of her husband's services to the colony, the Government granted his widow 400- acres of land and a pension of .£SO.
