MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, Juno 13. The weekly session of the Parliamentary Debating Society was held last evening when an interesting debate took place upon the question of' "Free-trade v. Protection." Mr. 6. R. Sykos championed the former, and Mr. A. E. Edwards the latter. The vote went in favour of Protection. Up till last night, over one hundred entries had been received for the inaugural competitions in connection with the Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society. As inquiries are being received from a number of outside districts, the committee last night decided to extend the time for receiving entries until Saturday next. The heavy rain that has fallen during the last few days has caused a suspension of all farming operations, and ploughing will be put back for some lime. Ail order has beeu given to a Sydney firm for the manufacture of five hundred automatic gas-lighting appliances for t'he Masterton company which was recently formed to exploit a contrivance patented by Mr. SamlifOrd.

The Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company is holding 179 boxes of . butter in the * cool store for the Waingawa work. This is for the local market.

It is stated that a Maori newspaper is to be published in the Wairarapa. An illustrated lecture was given in Knox Hall last night, by the Rev. U. Dannefocrd, director and founder of the Soldiers' Home in Poona, India. ■ The Rev. A. Hodge presided. The lecturer dwelt at length upon the lines and habits of British and Indian soldiers. A collection was taken up in aid of the Ramabai mission.

A meeting of the Coronation Celebration Committee was held last night, when it' was reported that arrangements were well advanced for the celebration on June 22. Messrs. Archer and Dixon wero appointed to submit a report as to the requirements for decorating tho Town Hall. Final arrangements are to be made at' a meeting on Thursday evening. Messrs. J. C. Ewington and P. Cotter have been appointed to represent the Mastcrton Co-operative Dairy Company nt the annual meeting of the National Dairy Association, which is to be held next month.
