PECULIAR LAXITY.
AN UNCOMPLETED DRAINAGE.
S-me other method than the prevailing one will have to be adopted in dealing with the matter of applications for drainage connections," stated the Petone borough engineor last evening, in his periodical report to the council. "At present there is no incentive for a drainlayer or plumber to completely finish any job ho undertakes, as the following will show:— An application was granted to do certain works to three cottage properties as far back as February 22 last. Part of the work has been done, yet it is still in an unfinished condition, and apparently the contractor does not caro whether it ever is completed. In the meantime the tenant and owner are the sufferers, and should illness occur owing to the noncompletion or wrong method of carrying out any portion of the work, the question of who is liable would have to bo fought out. There are other similar cases, and the only way to deal with them- is either to take' a substantial deposit with each application,- rcturnn'/.e upon completion of the works, as is done in the city, and other towns, or to refuse any other application from the same drainlayer or plumber under like conditions. "The council should deal with the matter, as tho position is somewhat acute." The council decided to issue notices to complete to the dilatory persons complained of.
