A settlement of the strike on a pompromised wage scalo is expcctcd to-day. SHEARERS' CONFERENCE FAILS. Sydney, June 9. A conference between tho Australian Workers' Union and the Pastoralists' Federal Council in connection with a case before tho Arbitration Court, in which the former body is asking for an award to apply to the shearing industry, proved futile. BRADFORD WOOL TRADE DISPUTE. London, June 8. Tho Bradford woolconibing dispute has assumed a less serious phase. The workmen are returning to work, the masters being' willing to consider a 5 per cent, advance in wages. Tho demand was for a general increase of 5 per cent, in wages, with a minimum of 255. a week for night workers. CO-OPERATION AND RINGS, j . Sydney, June 9. Tho committee of the Labour Council reported that the proposed schemo of cooperation, which had relied on a subscription of one shilling monthly from 120,000 trades unionists, was impracticable, though tho principle of co-operation was approved. Members expressed the view that a co-operation effort, with a strong backing, was- necessary in order to meet tho "rings." A member of the Coal Lumpers' Union informed the council that "shanghai-ing" was rife at Newcastle. Men were bought and fold like sheep in Sydney, and then shipped from Newcastle to Melbourne. SUGAR WORKERS SEEK SHORTER HOURS. (Rec. June 10, 1 a.m.) Brisbane, June 9. A deputation to-day asked tho Treasurer, Mr. Barnes, for an eight-hour day on the sugar fields. One speaker said he had no authority to say so, but' ho thought that unless tho demand was granted there would bo trouble. Mr. Barnes replied that this was tho wrong way to approach a Minister, but added that he would make inquiries into tho matter.
