RECIPROCITY'S FATE.

ONE AMENDMENT MADE. By TslcEraph—Pijcss Association—Copyriehl Washington, June 8. Tho Chairman of the Finance Committee of (lie United States Senate told tho committee that all tho amendments to the Canadian-American Reciprocity Dill are certain to be killed on the floor of tho Senate. Mr. Knox (Secretary for State), replying to interrogations by members of the committee, declined to state whether tho adoption of Senator Root's amendment to tho paper clause would kill reciprocity. NARROW MAJORITIES. (Rec. Juno 10, 1 a.m.) Washington, Juno 9. All tho amendments to the Reciprocity Bill, except Senator Roofs printing-paper provision, have been rejected by the Senate Finance Committee, by narrow majorities. The House of Representatives' offer of tho Democratic Free List Bill as an amendment was rejected without a division. Senator Root's amendment was adopted by eight votes to ' six. The Bill will bo reported to the Senate probably on Tuesday. OPINION IN CANADA. (Rec. June 10, 1 a.m.) Ottawa, June 9. Opinion here inclines to tho belief that Canada will undertake no objection to the Root amendment to the Reciprocity Agreement as the printing-paper schedule is not a material part of tho agreement. The selected list of items in the Farmers' Free List Bill, which it is proposed shall come in duty free ' into the United States, is intended to supplement the Canadian compact, and incidentally to embarrass the Republican low-tariff insurgents in both brunches, who have declared that their opposition to the Canadian agreement was based on the fact that it did not go far enough in its provisions.
