PROVINCIAL CENTRES.
(From Our Special Correspondents.) 9 WOODVILLE. Both the Borough and County Councils held their monthly meetings on Thursday last. The Borough Council meeting was a leng one, not finishing till nearly midnight. Tho Lighting Committeo's report on the street lamps stated that tho gas manager considered that an improvement could lx> effected in the clock-work lighting, and it was decided to continue such for a month or two longer, to test the effect of the manager's suggestion. The application for certain repairs to tho library was passed on for the Library Committee to deal with. A petition from Baker's Town residents for a footpath from Woodland's Road to Vogel Street was referred to the Works Committee. Tho same committee are to engage the county's grader, if licccssary, and to do' the patch-metalling on tho'diffcrent roads. There were three applicants for tho position of ranger. Mr. 0. Eutcliins was the successful applicant. Information had been received that tho Governmcnf would not subsidise any amount raised for the purpose of building a firo brigade station, in connection with the Coronation memorial, there being' no other suggestion to which tho money might be applied. The matter, was allowed to drop. Considerable discussion took place over a resolution asking: "That, at the next monthly meeting, a report be submitted showing tho amount of completed work in connection wifTi tho drainage scheme, and the expenditure." Tho council are putting the work through by day labour, and tho mover of the resolution considered that the information should be forthcoming, so that councillors could be kept in touch with the work as it progressed. Tho motion was, eventually, voted out. Regarding the opinion of Mr. Martin's solicitor, re tho Oroua Conntv Council's claim for the Lower Gorge Bridge, the Mayor was instructed to interview Mr. Burnett, solicitor for the council, and to ascertain tho reason of the delay in replying to tho council's question. The council has waited a considerable tinio for Mr. Mar--tin's reply, and it is upon this) that tho oouncil will act as to whether they pay or otherwise. The County Council, at their meeting,, decided to vote JEIO towards the Coronation celebrations. They purpose (as a memorial of the evenit) erecting a (lagstaff upon their offices, without asking for any subsidy. It was notified that a contract had been let for the building of a bridge on Lower Woodland's Road for .£389. The council decided that the fee for the hire of the grader should be two guineas per dav, all breakages to bo made good, The appointment of a ranger was left in the chairman s hands. One defaulting ratepayer, whose rates amounted to .£6O, had forwarded a cheque for tho amount, less the 10 per cent, overdue charge, stating that, as he derived more benefit from the Dannevirko Council (his property lying in that direction! he should be struck oft for payment of (hat amount. The council did not agree to this.
