Woll up to time, this week's direct boat from Sydney to Wellington— tho Ulimaroa —arrived at an anchorage yesterday morning. The vessel left the New South Wales port at 2 p.m. on Saturday last, and had a good passage across the Tasman Sea, ivitli the exception of experiencing heavy rain. She dropped anchor in the stream at 7.55 a.m., and berthed at No. 1 south at 9 a.m. Cargo amounting to nearly ICCO tons was brought for New Zealand ports, 475 tons being for Wellington. The vessel also brought transhipments ex the following steamers:—Kumaro Maru, Empire.. Orontes, Sydney. Prior to leaving Newcastle for Auckland, where she is to bo transformed into a hulk, the Union Company's barque Solgran had an exciting experience. Early on tho morning of Wednesday, May 31, she was run into by the tug Commodore. It appears that about 5.30 a.m. the Commodore was taking tho stoamer Age down from the top end of the Dyke, and the baro.uc Solgran, which lia<l arrived from Svdney about 1.30 a.m. in tow of tho Duckenfielil, was anchored in mid-stream. The Commodore's master did not notice the barque until he was near her. 'The engines of the steamer Ago were immediately put full speed astern. A strong ebb tide was running at the time, and this; combined with a- stiff westerly wind, carried the Commodore over on to the barque's stem. The barque's jib-boom swept across the tug, carrying everything before it, and at the same time tho Commodore's paddle-box struck the stem of the Solgran. The impact smashed the Commodore's paddle-box. and completely wrecked the wheel, a?_ well as tearing away a considerable portion of the snonson. The barque's jib-boom smashed the tug's mast and ripped .through the bridge, carrying portion of tho latter away. 'After the collision the Commodore vra-s taken to Hexham' for repairs. The Solgran is reported to be undamaged. After having discharged part, of her cargo from Bunbury at Wellington, tho Scales chartered steamer Clan Maelaren proceeds to Napier, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The W. H. Talbot, a four-masted schooner of 743 toil:--, has been chartered to bring a cargo of lumber from Columbia River to a New Zealand port. Included in the last oT latest charters is the barquentine Caria, 292 tons. She takes coal from Newcastle to Gisborne, and returns to Sydney with timber. Apparently the Union Company's East Coaft Bay trader Ilaupiri did not suffer much damage from the lire that was discovered in one of her holds this week. She left Auckland at 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday for Wellington,- via Limestone Island aud usual way ports. It is stated that the stoamer Delpliic, after having discharged her Home cargo in New Zealand, will go to Australia to load for the United Kingdom. The damaged steamer Wairau. which recently collided with the Himitangi in the Manawatu River, is to be repaired at- Picton. It is reported that there is a likelihood of the vessel being lengthened by 20ft- ' This afternoon, at. 2 o'clock, the uleamer Wootton is to leave Wellington for Nydia Boy, where she loads Umber, for Kaiajoi,
Mr. Pctcrf, second engineer of the ICaiapoi, loft the vessel at Lyttclton to eo into the Christchurch Hospital, where he v;ill have a j>iccc of f»tesl extracted from one of hiii cye.s. From Timnru, where she in now taUinp in Home carpo, the Shaw, Savill steamer Tokomaru comes on t-o Lyttclton and Wellington. From here she proceeds to Auckland, which is to be her final port in the Dominion. It i? proposed to dock the Mararoa. at Lyttclton on Juno 12 for cleaning and painting. The Maori will be similarly treated on June 17. About 6 a.m. to-day the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Paparoa will call at the Heads to pick up stevedores. She is en route from the south to \\ altar a. The Tainui is scheduled to leave port for Waitara and Mokau at 3 p.m. to-day. The Kapiti is to cet away for the former placo an hour later. At 1 p.m. yesterday the Shaw, Savill steamer. Pakelia left Auckland for Wellington. She is due here to-morrow afternoon.
