NOTES AND COMMENTS.
IB* Glkkcoe.] The absenco of tlio name of Master Soult from tho list of entries for the New Zealand Cup evidently means that the bay liorso is unable to stand'a preparation, and no doubt next season wd will find him doing stud duty.- He was started in tho Prince of Wales -Handicap On Monday,'and, though -tho reports to hand make no mention of the fact, it is probable that the race was too much for ■his weak joint, and'he broko down. Jockey H. Gray went to Auckland after the Otaki meeting, and was riding at Ellerslio yesterday. Tho entries for the New Zealand Cup ran hardly bo considered satisfactory from a numerical point of view, and the total received (Gl) is Ihe lo'v.vst for some years past. l ? ort William is the only horse which has been backed so far, and ■when tho quotations come out during the next day or two it will be found that the Hawkc's Bay. and Napier Park Cup winner is as good n favourite as anything engaged in the race. ... Dervish, who is now trained by J. Delauey at.JTeilding, is to bo schooled over fences. The- Chasseur gelding is big ■enough .to jump fences, and, if ho-be-comes proficient in this branch of the. sport, his paco" will enable him to win many races. Paparnehi is n former mem-' ber of A. Attwood's team, and is also an inmate of Delaney's stables.
Strathmoira was >*iven a jump at Feilding one morning Inst week, and went well. Previously ho had been inclined lo hang lire at his fences, but now seems to havo more confidence, and should improve with each lesson. 'l'ho victory of John, in the Campbell Hurdles at Ellorslic yesterday, will bring tho Wnugaiiui-owiiod horso .into prominence for the Eiccarton National Hurdles in August. A. Jackson's gelding is bred in the right way to both jump and stay, being by Cuirassier from iho riueerly-nanied Mataniataharakeke. In recent years Cuiragita, winner of the National Hurdles, gave Cuirassier a good advertisement as a siro of jumpers. Smilax, winner of tho York \\ elter event at Ellerslie yesterday, ran unplaced on both Saturday and Monday fit the same mot-ting. 1 The Hawd'a-tramed gelding is a very smart beginner, and this would stand him ill good stead in tho big field which he defeated yesterday. The owner of Inveran lias tired of trying to win a race on the flat with The Officer gelding, and ho has decided to havo him"schooled. T. Pritchard will go to. Carterton to jump him on his return from the A.R.C. meeting. Inveran is in the same stable as Full Rate, who it was thought would turn out a National winner, but the big fellow had no idea of jumping, and repeated schooling failed to improve him. Already there is a favourite for the next Winter Cup. and this, despite the fact.. that nominations have not yet closed. Those who saw ' Mr. Smart s gelding—llndecidefj—finishing in his only race at Otaki s-tato that, with the weight which lie is likely to get in the Y»iliter Cup, he will take all sorts of beating. Merry. Oliver, formerly a. well-known Miramar performer, has left Sydney to race in Melbourne. Tho Conqueror mare. Pakau, who has been entered for the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles, has already been sent from Sydney to Melbourne. At Flemington last Thursday morning the ex-New Zealander gave a dashing display over five hurdles. "Weights' for the first day's events at tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting are duo to-morrow. Notable absentees from the list of entries for the New Zealand Cup include Miss Mischief, Kopu, and Waiinangu. - Ridden by his trainer (F. Burn), Pilot was one of a field of five that went to tho post for the Steeplechase at Epsom. Melbourne, on May 31. Sunning, last all the way, however, the New Zealander finished fully a furlong behind tho other starters. Aviation (Elevation—lntelligence) underwent an operation yesterday by Mr. F. Crossley, veterinary surgeon. Tho' colt had become affected in tho wind, as the result of strangles. Nominations for all events at the Napier Park Racing Club's steeplechaso lpeeting close with tho secretary at 8 o'clock to-morrow night. FIXTURES. Jnno 21 and 22—Hawke's Bay J.C.
