A CHURCH'S WELCOME.
. TO ME. A. J. SAUNDERS, M.A. There was a large gathering at the Church of Christ, Vivian Street, last evening, to welcome tho new minister, Mr. A. J. Saunders, M.A. Tea was served in the early'part of the evening, and afterwards a public meeting was hold in the church, Mr. J. T. Hunter, secretary of the Church, presiding. A very hearty welcome was extended to Mr. Saumlers, Mr. K. T. Keith Ewen, Key. J. J. North (representing the Baptist Churches), Mr. E. B. Davis (president of the Associated Churches of Christ in the middle district of New Zealand), Mr. Miidge (representing the South Wellington Churches), all spoke words jf welcome, and', foretold a useful career for the new minister. The Eev. J. J. North, in particular, pointed out that men of forco and energy were now-a-days required for the ministry; that in this city existed a great field for energetic labour; and he hoped Mmt Mr. Pm.n. ders would prove an. addition to their fighting force. In the course of an address, Mr. Saunders expressed his deep appreciation of the kindness shown him. He regretted very much the illness of his predecessor, Mr, Mathieson. He was pleased to seethe Baptist ministers present, and he alluded to the movement towards reunion with the Baptist Church, which seemed to be gradually coming about. He spoke of the need of a greater sense of individual responsibility in the Church, and emphasised the desire for a "world consciousness" in matters of religion. A greater part should be played in the social activities of the community; they must bo broad-minded and not sectarian. A missionary snirit also was required. thoii"h here 'in Wellington ho was pleased' ti> see the Church was playing a great part in that branch of Christian work. Christian unionism should be their watchword, and along these lines the Church ef Christ would endeavour to proceed. In conclusion,. Mr. Saunders expressed his thankfulness at being associated with the Church .in Wellington. Before the 'gathering dispersed, Mr. .Saunders -conveyed greetings Irom Churches in Australia. During the evening the choir rendered very nicely several anthems.
