LONG FLEECES.
INTERESTING SHEEi , STORIES. • Our Christchurch correspondent states ': that two interesting specimens of lonsstapled wool were shown at a.meeting of the Shipowners' Union in that city a ■ few days ago. One was part of a fleece ' of a seven-year-old crossbred nether, owned by Mr. Pym, of Opuha Gorge, Geral<line, the fleeco of which weighed 361b. The wether was shorn for tho first time ,'kst season. The length of the wool is 126 inches. ■ Two years ago the wether ; v;as under snow for ten weeks. The other "; (specimen is a stapln of wool of over 26 (inches iu lenath from a half-bred full- '. mouthed ewe, the property of Mr. Brough.ton, of White Rock, North Canterbury. 'The eivo had never been into tho shearing shed, but was well known to tho Blusterers.- She. took up her quarters on a rocky face and shelter-on. a large projecting rock on a bltiff, seldom going away from her territory, except for a drink from- a creek a few hundred yards below i ; the'face. AVhen a musterer appeared tho ' ewe made for the rock, and remained close to its protection until the men and j their dogs had disappeared. "With a view ■of exhibiting the ewe-at the. last Christchurch show, Mr. Broughton secured her. ■ hut she died, probably from fright. Both the specimens of wool are ip-a sound condition, and there is no appearance of a break in the.staple.
